B'ky

Description

bky.jpg

Though not very tall, this pale man is by no means short. Built lean and slender, his lithe frame may not hold excessive muscle, but what is there has been toned and shaped well enough. His pasty skin is relatively clear, and the merest hints of a tan darken his arms and shoulders. Light gray eyes sit below wheat-hued brows. His hair, just long enough to fall over his back, is fairly straight. Though certainly not white, the strands have a definite washed-out quality to them, the blonde mingling with shades of faded brown, and taking on an occasional honey-like sheen in the right light. A soft face is framed by chin-length locks, though the rest, which are much longer, are usually tied neatly back. He has a narrow nose and thin lips, and is clean-shaven. The squared jawline seems out of place given his somewhat effeminite features. The man's hands, though small, have the roughness and callouses from years of hard work.

The clothing the dragonrider wears is not exceptionally stylish, but it isn't shabby either. His black pants are just loose enough to allow him to move with ease, but tight enough to not need a belt. Despite this, B'ky wears one anyway, hanging various pouches from it. A leather vest hugs his torso, worn over a snug, long-sleeved shirt of deep indigo. The vivid color is accompanied by a crimson and gray riding jacket, the latter color dominating so that the red only clashes slightly with the rest of his outfit. Sturdy boots in the same hues protect his feet, and his matching gloves are either worn or stowed in a clip at his waist. He also usually has a pair of riding goggles, again either worn, clipped to his belt, or pushed back to sit jauntily just above his forehead. The rider's knot on his shoulder is threaded blue with the color of his dragon.

History

Bevenky was born to greenrider Vicky and brownrider B'ven of Fort. Foisted off on the nannies, he grew up a typical weyrbrat, though perhaps a bit more soft-spoken than his peers. He barely saw his parents, who had been weyrmates briefly before Vicky decided to move to Telgar with a bronzer, leaving her then-teenaged son behind. Bevenky had made himself useful in the weyr, helping out where he could and assisting the various lower cavernfolk with whatever odd jobs they needed doing. In his fourteenth turn, the youth was searched for a clutch and managed to impress a blue. The dragon did wonders for Bevenky's - now B'ky - sense of adventure, and the pair were soon through weyrlinghood with only minor problems. Discovering a love for flying, and then for travel, B'ky became a transport rider, ferrying people and packages all across Pern. Though neither rider nor dragon are exceptionally strong, they've endeared themselves to many folks in distant cotholds and even a few Halls for their willingness to haul stuff for only a half-mark or less (more often much less), and for the nearly always prompt and safe delivery of items in their care. B'ky is especially likely to give free rides and to transport equipment for the Healer Hall for little or nothing, due to a close call once which he doesn't like to talk about but which has given him a healthy respect for well-secured crates and a deep admiration for the healers of Pern. He's been doing transport work for about 15 turns, and upon reaching his thirtieth turnday, he decided to finally use those marks he'd been saving up and treat his dragon and himself to a bit of a vacation. Where he ended up was perhaps not so important, though he'd always been fond of his birthplace. Unfortunately, B'ky's vacation and inability to say no when help was needed took them from Ierne to Xanadu, where the bluerider briefly (and unsuccessfully) attempted to reconcile with his former weyrmate, greenrider B'miel. Political tensions and no small amount of homesickness eventually led to the bluerider returning to Fort, where he immediately re-joined Roc wing.

Character Trivia

  • B'ky grew up hearing harper songs of great dragonriders past, and despite the end of Thread, the bluerider feels a strong sense of commitment to the well-being of Pern. He may not be a leader, but like the wingriders of old, he would gladly and selflessly serve for the sake of the weyrs.
  • B'ky is sometimes polite to a fault, and has a habit of offering to help with anything and everything; this is likely why he hasn't managed to take a proper vacation in over fifteen turns.
  • B'ky is soft-spoken and reserved, and somewhat old-fashioned. He tries to be a gentleman, and Avideth is the sort that always attempts to be polite, though there are quite a few things that the pair are a bit touchy about.
  • Avideth can often come across as quietly friendly and sensitive, but he's got a few odd quirks, such as a fascination with human things like fashion and clothing.
  • B'ky will often give in to Avideth's whims - even when those whims involve changes the bluerider might make to himself (such as buying certain clothes or how he wears his hair - hence the eye-jarring blue & red riding gear).
  • B'ky once commissioned a large hat. For Avideth. It was bright yellow. And purple. And floral. No, neither of them has great fashion sense.
  • B'ky tries to take a few hours every day to just go flying with Avi, often visiting favorite, far-off places or just soaring quietly over the ocean.

Dragon

avideth.jpg

Painted by the Winds Blue Avideth
Swathes of bright sky blue sweep almost uniformly over the back and wings of this dragon. The color deepens slightly as it spreads down across his shoulders and over his haunches, darkening to indigo at the joints and creases of his legs. Cerulean bathes his belly, streaming out over the arch of his long neck and tail. A wedge-shaped head holds wide, round eyes and violet-splashed headknobs, the purplish tint swooping down the length of his snout to touch the very tip of his nose. Though not terribly large for his kind, the blue's flanks and limbs ripple with muscle beneath the smooth skin. His talons are a cloudy blue-gray, elegantly curved and sharp.
