Log 6: Arguement with Ista's Weyrwoman

Xanadu Weyr - Weyrleaders' Office
Office and retreat, this is the domain of Xanadu's Weyrleaders. The door is in the eastern wall, quite close to the southern end while the northern wall is dominated by big, expansive windows, framed by sumptuous deep blue drapes edged with a brilliant gold braid and tied back with a thick rope of braided gold and blue cord. In between, the eastern wall is covered floor to ceiling with shelves that house all sorts of records, manuals and supplies that are used on a day-to-day basis. The southern wall has the Weyrleader's desk — plain fellis wood, well polished and masculine. From behind his desk, the Weyrleader can look straight through the windows and out onto the main airspace of Xanadu. The western wall is where the Weyrwoman's desk resides: a lovely piece of furniture made of warm cherry wood. From her seat, a glance sideways gives her an equally good prospect out the window. There are a few other seats, some comfortably arranged around a low round table for small, informal meetings while there also some that can be drawn up to one of the desks.

Niva is settled at her desk, her back to the open door, staring at a pile of printouts on her desk, idly flipping through them as she sips at a glass of wine, an occasional glance thrown out the window, before fidgeting more with the paperwork.

[DTU/Project] Kilaueth senses that Umniyath sends a challenging swirl of thought in reply, «Mine will come to yours whether you announce or not.»

Not long after landing does the Weyrwoman of Ista seek directions to the Weyrwoman's office. As she finds it she at least gives the courtesy of knocking upon the doorframe. "Weyrwoman Niva I wish conference with you." She calls through the open doorway. There is an edge to her voice that is for sure, though carefully controlled.

Niva doesn't even turn around, still flipping through papers, hmming softly at the unrecognized voice. "And what did Asiree do now, hm? I can't even be rid of her when she's on the continent." Her assumption is offered, fingers tapping the desk slowly as she hmms, changing to a new bound set of papers.

The young weyrwoman from Ista steps into the office and heads toward the desk, "Weyrwoman Niva I would ask you face me and tell me the rumours I have heard are not true. This has nothing to do with Asiree whoever she is." There is definatly an edge in her carefully contained voice. She is not the quite little mouse today.

Niva finally actually glances over her shoulder to figure out just who it is, arching her eyebrow at Lisle, replying rather calmly. It doesn't seem as if the appearance of the other has fazed her one bit. "And if the rumors are? Its my Weyr, I can pick who I want to stand for clutches, and who not. Its just… selective." And she scoots the chair back, turning to face the Istan fully, though she still makes no move to stand up.

"You are denying the dragons choice over a petty fued!" Lisle replies to the woman, hands rising to her hips. "This needs to stop now Niva before more people get injured. All we asked was a clearance from Farmcraft. I will not risk my weyr over grains." Oh yeah, meek little mouse is definatly left at Ista. Her green eyes flare with anger as she stands there in front of the Xanadu Weyrwoman.

Niva snorts. "The dragons do fine when we Search from our own caverns - The dragons will do fine with a limited Search. Its no different then if we didn't Search from Ista because they were suffering from a plague. And, they are." Hazel eyes glare at Istan, and she shrugs. "Besides - With still no proof of the cause, the bans remain in place. Including on candidates." Makes enough sense, right?

"There is no plague at Ista. It is not Ista who has reported blight on crops. To deny people search based on some political crap…well smacks of immaturity." Lisle responds to the woman. "We have not even gotten a report on the assasin sent to Ista. It has been over a month now Niva, surely you must know something. Why are people killing people over grain?"

"/You/ and that Weyrleader of yours are the plague on Ista. Search may be allowed or denied based on the needs and the current situation. And given that, we will not Search at Ista. Or Igen. Consider it a result of your immaturity." A hand is swept backwards at the piles of paperwork on her desk. "I have other things more pressing then discovering what backwater, over-obsessive idiot took it into his head to kill your weyrleader. Perhaps if he hadn't died, it would be solved. Instead, given your Weyrleader is still alive, from what you say, I'd not worry. If it was us, believe me, my Junior would have not have responded to help, nor would he still live. Infirmaries are hardly secure."

Lisle stands there stunned for a moment, hands remaining on her hips. Her mouth drops open in a little o. "Niva you have gone too far. This is no longer about the crops or has it ever been?" She stands there a moment longer just seething, incredulous look upon her face. "I can not believe I am hearing these words come out of the mouth of a Weyrwoman of Pern. There is little more pressing then discovering who tried to kill a leader of a Weyr." Her hands raise to the air, "I have moved my son to safety, I carry a sharding weopon now. Because one of your people attacked someone on MY soil. Would you be any less concerned had it been your Weyrleader? Would you not want to know everything you could as soon as you could to prevent it?"

Niva leans back in her chair, staring up at Lisle. "This is and always has been about the crops." At least in some way, shape, or form. "I would be concerned if it was my 'leader, yes. I would also be investigating - And I certainly wouldn't believe that just because the guy was wearing an Istan knot that he was Istan." Pause. "If I was to try and kill S'va, do you not think I would be smart enough to have him remove his Xanadu knot first? Or do you think me such an idiot that I'd leave such an obvious sign right there for all to see?" A deep breath and she continues to glare. "Has it ever entered into your empty little head that perhaps it was someone else? Like.. The renegades? I don't let my children out of my sight without supervision - we have both animal and human predators to fear. Perhaps you have some of the latter too."

"I had little thought that you were behind his attack Niva, you are a rider I do expect more from riders, especially Weyrwomen, but we gave the body over to your weyr for investigation and have heard nothing in reply. Are you even investigating it? If it were a frame I would think you would be even more curious as to who it might be, who would frame Xanadu for this." Lisle replies working really hard to keep her temper in check. It does not help that she is coming up to being proddy. "Niva has it ever entered your head that this would pass over quicker if we worked together and did not fight each other? If it is renegades who is to stop them stirring trouble over here next. Perhaps you, your weyrleader, your children." There is almost pleading in her voice.

"There is little you can find out from a dead body - How are we to identify it? No one recognized them as being from here. We can't exactly ask the renegades. We said we would notify you when we found something - We have found nothing, because there is nothing to find. We have people listening, ears open for whispers and reactions. But, between earthquakes and crops, there's little talk of other things. We've nothing to offer." And that's her response, Niv shrugging slightly. "We are fine by ourselves. We will resolve our issues with Ista when our own internal issues are resolved, so you have no more reason to worry. Until then, I ask you to leave. We are safe, for now. I recommend you take such protective steps yourself."

"Until then you will hold a prejudice still with any who are Istan or Igen?" Lisle asks her voice actually drawing a calm again. "If so, then I request the transfer of the rider Lyn and all who look to her. If this is the way of things, then I fear for her safety at Xanadu. I will not have my family treated poorly for their Istan origins." Oh yes Lyn would be most upset over this. "I will protect me and mine as you protect yours. At least that we have in common. Hopefully this …ban will not cause hostilities between our riders and residents, but even as Weyrwoman there is only so much we can control."

"Any who are here are considered Xanadu riders - They are treated as such, and provided with the same safety as I provide my children. The prejudice is against those coming from either Ista or Igen now - Just as you fear what a Xanadian might bring, if it may be another assassination, I fear what an 'Istan' or 'Igenian' may bring.. whether they really are what they claim to be." Niva shakes her head slightly. "My riders will not bring harm, and I assume yours will not either. However, the others are the risk, and thus I must insist until all things are settled that things stay as they are."

Lisle nods shortly, "If I hear of one act against her or hers I will pull her from this weyr. As you must protect your family, I must protect mine." She responds quietly, "Do not fear Ista, fear those that set to set us odds. I am not your enemy Niva." She bobs her head curtly to the woman."I just worry you do more harm deny the dragons of every choice." With that she does turn around and head out of the room.

Niva inclines her head in acceptance of the sentence, watching her as she leaves, even offering a almost unheard 'clear skies' under her breath before she turns back to the paperwork in front of her, fingers resuming their tapping once more.
