Weyrling Lesson: Delynni and Ryukith Fly Together

Xanadu Weyr - Clearing

A wide clearing stretches from east to west, the ground packed hard although grass grows across most of it. Trees are strictly forbidden in this space, their danger to the constant draconic traffic reason enough to banish them to the forest that creates a this and sharp border to the north. Where the ground is less trampled, tiny flowers poke their delicate heads out from their shaded hiding places with upturned petals to wave to whoever may be looking.
The cliff looms imposingly on three sides, stretching upwards all the way up the side of the mountain where, high above, Xanadu's Star Stones and the ever present watchdragon sit on a lonely peak. Directly south is a massive tunnel, fully wide enough for even the largest dragon to fly down. Southeast are wide steps leading up to the Caverns and eastwards is the large entrance to the Infirmary. Somewhat north of the Infirmary is a human sized archway that has a frequent quantity of traffic — it leads to the Tavern. Southwest lies the low ledges currently belonging to Xanadu's queens while north and west a broad path cut by the side of the cliff leads to the Feeding Grounds and due north is the spacious trail that leads to the rest of the Weyr.

L'alie has been taking the weyrlings one at a time for this lesson, and this is Delynni's turn. Adinaeth is waiting patiently, already festooned with his pink riding straps. L'alie is relaxing against Adie's forelimb, examining her nails.

Delynni has been preparing Ryukith's straps for sevendays, the blue looking very snappy in the simple indigo straps. The only form of adornment these crisp and sturdy straps has is a single feathered tassle with tiny silver bells. The blue struts for Adinaeth and L'alie to inspect his rider's handiwork.

L'alie smirks at the strutting dragon as she glances up from her nails. "Could be worse. Adinaeth always insisted on pink, and the sequins. Well, we experimented with sparkles with his second set of straps, but it just wasn't the same. Are you two ready, Del?"

Delynni laughs as she eyes Adinaeth's pink straps. "Yes, very ready! Ryukith has been exercising every day. As for the design? He thought simple was best." Ryukith's tail curls cleverly behind him and gently flicks the belled tassel. ring ring. flick. ring ring. flick. ring ring, then croons eagerly.

L'alie shrugs. "Probably, especially since you have to keep making them. Very kind of him. Just be glad you don't have a high maintenence dragon." She thumps Adinaeth fondly and then grins. "Well then! Mount up, huh? We'll launch, circle the weyr, and come back down."

Delynni cheers and Ryukith ducks down for his rider to mount. Delynni clambors up, climbing up onto her lifemate's neck and seating herself. Her fingers fumble just a bit with the buckles, but she gets herself settled in well enough. Delynni beams, Ryukith archs his back just a bit, loosening his muscles and looking to L'alie and Adinaeth for instruction.

Away from Ryukith, Adinaeth's neck> L'alie grins over at the blueling and vaults to Adinaeth's back with the practice of almost two decades. "Buckles good and tight? Yes, good!" She fastens herself in and Adinaeth turns his head towards Ryuukith. « Just like before, okay? You just, like, push off, and once you're airborn, you know, like, follow me up. Don't get too close to the trees, they'll totally get caught up in your wings and it's, like, totally awful. Ready, go! » Adinaeth leaps into the air, pumping his wings and rising into the air.

Delynni grins and double, then triple checks her straps one more time. Then Ryukith rumbles to Adinaeth. «Indeed teacher, tell me, why do you use 'like' in so many places it should not be? It drives me up a rope butchering the language like that.» Ryukith crouches, then leaps skywards. He pounds the air, bellowing in joy as he falls into line behind Adinaeth. He beats his wings, testing the air, rise a bit, drop a bit, edge left, edge right. Yes, all in order.

You spread your mighty wings and leap into the air, surging upwards.

Xanadu Weyr - Clearing Sky(#1569RJLa)
The busiest spot of the Weyr, this is an interesting place to watch if one has a safe vantage point. Dragons and firelizards are almost always in the air here, the latter sometimes an unpredictable swarm flittering in and out of *between*. South is a massive tunnel, beginning at ground level but stretching high enough to be flown into although as yet, there is a strict injunction from Xanadu's Queens that no dragon is the venture down that tunnel without explicit permission. Near the tunnel is a huge ledge, big enough to hold all the Weyr's golds and most of the bronzes at once. The rest of the cliff is pockmarked with ledges marking dragon weyrs and in the nearest, you can just make out the deep gouges made by generations of dragon claws.

Away from Ryukith, Adinaeth rumbles encouragement to Ryukith, sliding sideways in a wide circle around the clearing. « Because, like, that's just how I speak. I, like, like it. So, you know, don't, like, have a cow. Chuh. » L'alie waves to Delynni, lifting her hand high and making a broad circling gesture to indicate she wants to pair to make a ring around the area. She pumps her fist twice to signal this should happen twice, and then slashes her hand downwards to indicate they should land after two loops of the clearing.

Away from Ryukith, Ryukith tips just a bit to let L'alie know that they've heard her. Delynni nods, and Ryukith takes off. Only a smidgeon unsure of himself, the blue tests the air as he makes the first loop. Up, down, slight turn, probing the winds until he catches a nice tailwind, opens his wings, and soars. Delynni yeeee haaaawws, holding on tight with a huge grin on her face. Ryukith speeds up just a little, bringing himself into the return stretch of loop one.

Away from Ryukith, Adinaeth's neck> L'alie chuckles, Adinaeth taking a smooth glide over the level of Ryukith. « When you have, like, practiced, you can, like, go higher. Tomorrow, we will practice, like, gliding from the starstones. »

Away from Ryukith, Ryukith rumbles, rain pattering the edges of Adinaeth's mind, bells tinkling into the mix. «I look forwards to it.» the sentance is a purr as the blue enters loop two. «I want to know everything.» The wind picks up just a bit, and Ryukith uses its pressure to dance, flying into it and riding the wind like the ravens of old earth. Wings pounding the air, lift, turn, spin, turn, the blue indulges in a brief spiral. Delynni laughing and grinning hugely from his back. The blue banks steeply, his movements the most natural thing in the world as he rounds the curve. A lash of his tail and he's evened out towards the end of the loop. The blue reaches the end of the loop and slowly glides downward again.

Away from Ryukith, Adinaeth breaks his gliding to plunge down to a landing, not showing off just in case his young charge decides to do the same. « You will, in time. Mine and I have, like, been flying forever, you know! So, like, eventually, you'll get it. Your wings are new, though, so, like, try to take it easy, right? Careful on the landing. »

Away from Ryukith, Ryukith drops to the ground delicately, poised with his wings spread, his body turned dramatically, tail coiled around him like a halo and neck curled in a delicate arch. «I am careful. I will be strong. I will practice.» Ryukith says simply. «Indeed, by taking it easy, I gather information. When the time is right I will fly more delicately, gracefully and precisely than any other.»

You backwing calmly to land in the Clearing.

Away from Ryukith, In the Sky, Adinaeth sends a great burst of dingy pink approval. « Keep trying, you will get it. » L'alie slides off when he's landed, rubbing a hand through her long blond hair. "Great job, you two. Very good."
