DragonHealers and a Miner

Xanadu Weyr - Caverns
A massive cavern in it's own right, this one has been skillfully adapted for human habitation. The high ceilings have been painted a light, soft ivory, as are the walls where numerous tapestries hang to provide brilliant color and insulation from the stone. The floor has been left in its natural state, pale pink granite speckled through with glittering mica and dark flecks of basalt, leveled carefully but kept sufficiently rough to avoid slips.
The cavern itself is loosely divided into areas, each one set up to be suitable for some segment of the Weyr's population. The most frequently occupied area, however, is the one near the Kitchens where tables of varying sizes provide a place to sit down and eat or chat and a buffet of consumables is almost always kept stocked. Its plain that on most days, this area wouldn't accommodate anywhere near the full population of the Weyr and equally plain that on such occasions when a formal meal is laid out, tables are appropriated from all the other areas.
A big fireplace is set into the wall near the Kitchens as well, several comfortable chairs nearby providing haunts for elderly residents or riders who like a good view of all that happens. Rugs cover the floor in strategic spots, all of them abstract or geometric in design and most in the softly neutral colors of undyed wool.
Exits lead off in all directions, a big archway the largest and that leading outside. Shallow stairs to the west lead to the offices and administration area while tunnels to the east lead to the infirmary, kitchen and resident's quarters. Southwards, a sloping tunnel leads down to the hot springs and southwest is a wide tunnel, carefully roped off to avoid accidents.

"Just like any other weyr or weyrhold…" Saige can be heard muttering to herself as she steps into the Living Caverns at Xanadu Weyr. A black pack at her side, and a larger one slung over her shoulder, she waves at a departing knotted Ierneian Brownrider before she starts heading further in,ambling towards the food.

Neferennu is coming out from the kitchens, a sweetroll in one hand as yet untouched. In her other hand is a notebook, open and reading while walking. She knows exactly where she is going and passes right in front of Saige, not seeing her, to make her way to a seat at a table nearby. "Wings must be exercised before flight and flight must be practiced over and over to lessen the chances of injury to the young dragon." This is muttered from her notes as a seat is slipped into and the notebook set down on the table.

Looking more than a mite bit dirty, Satoris tromps into the Living Caverns. The man has only begun to remove the harnesses required for his work and he makes a great deal of noise as he ambles his way towards a table that holds a few hot plates and Klah. Only the hot liquid is poured into a mug and he's soon heading, shortly after Neferennu, to a table.

Saige pauses from her table nearby where she's got a piece of sweetroll; her gaze narrows and she wanders over towards Neferennu, pausing at the table between her and Satoris. "Your talking about dragon injuries, aren't you?" She inquires. "Dragon healer studies?"

Neferennu blinks and looks up at Saige, then gives a warm smile and nods. Clearly her mind didn't pick up anyone in the room. "Yes, I am. Finally made the first grade and working towards the second." A motion of her hand for the woman to go ahead and take a seat before the sweetroll is nibbled at, eyes returning back towards the notebook. "New here?" Sweet and to the point, though eyes remain on the notes and the drawings before her.

The voices get Satoris' attention, to an extent, but all he does is nod briefly at the two women. "Good day," the miner murmurs before settling into a seat, equipment still clinking and clanging.

Saige tilts her head, and nods. "Aye. I'm Saige… I'm certified Grade 3 DragonHealer. I was born and raised and did all of my trianing so far at Ierne's School, and transferred here to finish my training." She explained. "So new, yes. Very new."

Neferennu chuckles. "Well, then welcome to Xanadu. I began my training late I found out when I got here. So I have a while yet until I will even reach grade 2 but.." A shrug and then Satoris is noticed, though how she ignored all that clanking is unknown. "Hey, Satoris, you want to have some company?" A wave for him to come closer if he would like, then her hands are closing her notebook before getting up to grab a mug of tea. "My mentor is one of the junior weyrwoman here, Ethne, but I've been working with T'sar on the latest weyrlings that are starting betweening. Do you have a specialty yet?" The tea is poured into the mug before the seat is occupied once again.

"I don't wish to interrupt," Satoris says, nodding to Saige. "Carry on. I'm just taking a rest before starting on my reports for the night." He's pretty dirty looking.

Saige smiles wryly. "I went into the practice at fourteen, before that I just hung around and was the annoying weyrbrat." She says, laughing slightly. "I think it's K'vin I'm assigned too, but I'm not sure - and no specialties yet. I wanted to get here before I chose." She waves at Satoris. "Reports? What's your craft?" She asks cheerfully. "It sure isn't being a harper!"

"Miner," Satoris explains, taking a long drink of the Klah. He's got dirt and scrapes all over him and grit in his hair. "Far from Harper, I'm afraid." He glances into his mug once it's, sadly, empty, and gets to his feet, ambling for the pot again. More Klah!

Neferennu laughs. "I doubt you'll be interrupting. Just talking and grabbing a snack is all." A shrug is given towards Saige but her eyes sparkle a bit. "If I had learned I could join at 14, I would've. I didn't learn about the dragonhealing skill until I was 14 at Landing and came here at 15. So I'm about 2 turns behind everyone else."

Saige smiles. "Your younger than I must be, then. You can't get your grade three certification till your twenty… so." She shrugs, and glances at Satoris. "Rough work, or just dirty?" She inquires.

"Well, if you're certain," Satoris says, refilling his mug and glancing over his shoulder awkwardly. At Saige's question, he debates for a short time. "Both, I suppose. I'm exploring a cave system that opened after the earthquake."

Neferennu nods. "I suppose. I don't think age should really matter though." Another bite of sweetroll. "Yeah, come on over Satoris." Then she eats on the sweatroll and just smiles.

Saige raises and lowers one shoulder. "I never thought it should really, either." She explains, taking a seat, setting her own pack down on the table. "I'm supposed to go through the DragonHealer Annex off of the Hatching Grounds soon, so I s'pose I better stick around you." Another gaze at Satoris. "Hmhm. You mean the one I heard about awhile ago?

"Usually the age factor is so they can be sure you're mature enough as well," Satoris points out, settling down upon a bench across from them. Either he just sits down heavily all the time, or it's all the equipment. He sips the Klah and nods to Saige. "That same one."

Neferennu shudders at the mention of the earthquake and hole opening up, almost choking on the piece of sweetroll. Cough, cough. "Uh…luckily it got blocked off before anyone fell in. I was a bit uneasy during that quake let me tell you." A nod to Saige and the rest of the roll is finished off rather quickly, wiping her mouth on her sleeve. "Ah yes, the Annex. I'm off for the rest of the day but I can show you over there if you want." Then a blush as it dawns on her that introductions were never made. "I'm sorry, I'm Neferennu, but I go by Rennu." An offered hand towards Saige.

Saige takes the hand, and grins genially. "Saige, but I think I said that. I'm not like that herb, sage, either, though some people call me as green as one." She notes, laughing wryly. "Thanks for the offer, too. Xanadu's so different from Ierne!"

"The cave, if it's suitable for a mine, will bring Xanadu a lot of good trade and income," Satoris explains, shrugging distantly. He nods to Saige, sipping at the klah. "I'm Satoris, Journeyman Miner."

Neferennu grins and then leans back into the chair. "Well yes, it would bring good income for the weyr, but I still don't like how it just appeared instead of you digging it." Then eyes return towards Saige again. "I must say it does sound a lot like the herb itself, I harvest it at the greenhouse. And yes, Xanadu is much different than Ierne." Eyes then away and look down at the table, face a mask of hidden pain.

Saige glances at Rennu, and sighs. "Hmm…" She drawls softly. "Have you ever looked at the cave area? Just to see if it'll come any more normal? I mean, it's not, not really, but I'm excited about peeking around about it!" She exclaims. "Oh my, maybe I should harvest it then." She says, laughing softly.

"That's how most caves are formed," Satoris explains to Neferennu, studying her a moment. He sips from the klah again, making a bit of a face. Bottom of the pot, perhaps. "The ground shifts and breaks open." Those pale eyes shift to Saige them and his jaw tightens. "I'm afraid it won't be suitable to be explored for a while. There's still the possibility that it's quite dangerous. I'm still finding out if it's safe or not."

Neferennu sighs and shudders again. "Still, it is unnerving just to see it happen." The last of her tea is downed and she stands. "Excuse me." A warm smile and she heads back into the back caverns, leaving her notebook on the table.

Saige glances down at Rennu's notebook, just curiously, and then back at Satoris. "I'd still like to see, eventually." She replies, stubbornly, a quirk in her mouth. "What's it like down there, anyways?"

Unable to resist, Satoris also casts a glance to the notebook. He's turning his not-quite-empty mug in his hands when Saige's question brings his attention back to the fore. He considers a bit and shrugs, at last. "Very dark and dirty… But it's new. I'm the first person down there, exploring it all."

Neferennu returns a couple minutes later and retakes her seat. "Sorry about that." Though no explanation as to why she had to leave, nor that it should be needed. "So, what did I miss?" A large grin and an innocent look.

Saige grins up at Rennu. "Not much, but evidently, your pleased." She notes at that look/grin.

Neferennu laughs. "Well, it helps to get rid of some pains." A definite dodge to the comment and then she gets up to pour herself more tea. "So if I may ask, why did you choose here to continue your work? Igen Weyr is usually where most of the dragonhealers go. As certified, you could probably have gone anywhere you wanted."

Saige shrugs. "Because of the Annex and with the eggs. I'm probably going to have a odd speciialty, taking care of dragon eggs, but - that's okay." She says, complacently. "Or just dragons in general."

It all goes somewhat over poor Satoris' head. He knows about the earth and what's in it, not dragons. His ride to the Weyr initially was his first time ever getting close to one. The Journeyman rises, muttering something about bad Klah, and slips into the kitchens to discuss getting a fresh pot. He stands half-in and half-out the door, explaining in detail how terrible the dregs of the one pot were.

Saige watches at Neferennu fatches tea, and then Satoris goes to get klah. Laughing softly, she heads out to get more aquainted with the Weyr.
