L'alie Learns to Between

Xanadu Weyr - Weyrling Grounds

Cradled in a cup shapped bite out of the mountain, this wide, grassy flat has become home for Xanadu's weyrling dragons. It's set surprisingly high above the level of the beach, visible from the eastern side of the grounds where a long path snakes its way down the hill to the sand dunes below. All other sides to the grounds are bordered by the hard granite cliffs, two entrances clearly visible. One is merely human sized and leads deep into the mountain, to the Caverns. The other is broad and high, the entrance to the Weyrling Barracks.

Niva, expanded stomach and all, carefully slides down off of Kilaueth's back, joining O'era where the older bronzerider stands against his Fantomuth as she glances towards the weyrling barracks.

L'alie hops off Adinaeth as soon as the brown has landed and the dust clears. She salutes to the Weyrwoman and the bronzerider smartly and says, "Weyrwoman, Kilauth, Assistant Weyrlingmaster, Fantomuth." She dips her head to rider and dragon in turn and then folds her hands in front of her.

Niva takes a few steps forward, glancing over her shoulder at O'era before looking back to L'alie with an inclination of her head. "Now, L'alie. This is a very serious lesson, and I expect you and Adinaeth to act as such, understand?" Kilaueth rumbles her own warning to the younger brown.

L'alie dips her head, "Yes'm." the edge of her mouth tightens. "We saw that girl from the last group between herself into the rock, Miss Niva. Adinaeth and I don't want to end up next to her."

Niva nods her head to L'alie, glancing a quick glance over at O'era with a curiously arched eyebrow before looking back to the weyrling. "When betweening, its crucial that you always completely envision your destination and never fail to ensure that you will reappear in empty space."

L'alie nods, her eyes flicking as she stores this away, "How do you know where you're going though? I mean, say I wanted to end up at Paradise River? They're hours ahead of us, doesn't the time of day affect it?"

Niva flicks her fingers at the position of the sky. "As long as you don't assign a particular time to your envision, merely including the correct details, you'll remain in the proper timeline. By adding the details of a particular point in time, you will between to that time, which should be avoided. You should still keep in mind, and you will learn differences with practice, where the sun would be in the sky, when jumping place to place."

L'alie blinks a few times, "Then, how do you know that people really disappear when they don't come out of between? What if they accidently flip through time, and come out in the future or something?"

Niva shakes her head slightly from side to side. "We can never be certain that someone is completely lost between, because if you jump to a distant enough time, the dragons will no longer be able to hear your dragon. However, we generally assume that, if the dragons can no longer hear you, that you have become lost."

L'alie ohs softly and makes a face, "I think my flowers would die if I did that, so if its alright with you, I'd like to stay in this timeline."

Niva nods her head to L'alie, managing a bit of a grin. "We would prefer you to stay in this time line as well." O'era takes a few steps forward then, to stand a step behind Niva. "For this first jump, O'era's going to accompany you on Adinaeth. Adinaeth will get his direction directly from Kilaueth, double-checking it with O'era. This jump you will be, essentially, a passenger. Do you have any questions?"

L'alie shakes her head quietly, tucking a lock of hair back up into her riding cap, "So Adie's going to get the image from Kilaueth, and then show it to O'era and me- I assume I have to see it to know just what one of these images should look like." She nods a little and looks over at her brown, "Got that, Ads?"

Niva nods her head to L'alie, waving a hand to Adinaeth with a bit of a grin. "You can mount up, and O'era will double check your straps. Kilaueth and I will fly with you, but I won't be betweening. I'll be waiting for you to reemerge." Niva turns to move towards Kilaueth, hesitating next to the gold as O'era heads towards Adinaeth, waiting for L'alie.

L'alie vaults onto her bond's back, grimacing at the pink straps. "They weren't my idea." She tells O'era, waiting for him to mount up before passing back the passanger hitches and hooking herself in.

O'era climbs up behind L'alie, double checking the weyrling's straps before fastening his own, giving a thumbs up sign to Niva, before leaning forward slightly. "Tell him to take off, slowly, and to rise over the center clearing." Niva, upon the signal, manages to get herself up on Kilaueth, settling herself gingerly between the ridges, carefully strapping herself in, Kilaueth spreading her wings to take off after the younger brown.

Xanadu Weyr - High Sky
It is easy to see why the settlers of Xanadu chose this exact spot to live out their lives. Here high above the Weyr one gets a good perspective on the landscape that drew the eye of that rider long ago that sought out the home for a new Weyr. Mountains loom protectively above this pristine little valley, while an energetic river races headlong down the northern side, in a hurry to reach the lake that rests peacefully to the east. Grove after grove of trees dot the land, creating endless shade for the human or dragon.
As well-placed as the natural aspects of the Weyr are, the founders worked hard to keep with the uncontrived rhythms of the valley while destroying as little of it as possible. All of Xanadu opens up below you, welcoming the odd visitor into its friendly arms, or calling a cheerful 'Welcome Home' to the rider and dragon after a visit away.

Away from Kilaueth, Adinaeth slides into the air easily, wings outstretched to catch the thermals rising from the lake. He swivels his head towards the gold, blue swirled eyes glinting in the sunlight. He glides in a lazy circle having reached height, waiting for the gold's image.

Away from Kilaueth, Kilaueth rather lazily rises with Adinaeth, settling into a hover as Niva looks towards the pair on the brown. O'era leans forward towards L'alie again. "Have Adinaeth take the image from Kilaueth, now. Have him hold it, and then pass it along to both of us."

Away from Kilaueth, Adinaeth's neck> L'alie dips her head and waits. Adinaeth tilts his head, mind reaching out to take the image from Kilaueth and then retreat, folding over the picture before passing it to L'alie and his passanger.

Away from Kilaueth, Kilaueth hovers, wings continuing to beat lazily as Niva, on her back, keeps her gaze carefully on the weyrling. As she's told the image has been transferred, she raises a hand and drops it. O'era waits a minute, closing his eyes as the image is passed along, nodding slowly before his attention shifts to L'alie. "Remind Adinaeth that he's to get the image from me. And on the count of three, tell him we go between." He pauses for the directions to be passed along, before counting. "One, Two… Three."

Away from Kilaueth, Adinaeth's neck> L'alie takes a deep breath and gives the dragon the command, "Between, Adie." She leans back slightly as Adinaeth slips through the fabric of time and space and appears on the other side a breath later.
Away from Kilaueth, Adinaeth's back> <OOC> L'alie says, "since you didn't give me a destination if you wanted me to use the code :)"

Away from Kilaueth, Adinaeth suddenly disappears -=* BETWEEN *=-

Away from Kilaueth, Adinaeth suddenly reappears from -=* BETWEEN *=-

Niva unconsciously holds her breath as the trio goes between, eyes scanning the sky, visibly relaxing as the reemerge. A hand is raised and swung widely as a grinning O'era reaches forward to give her a cheerful slap on the thigh. "G'job.." And he continues grinning as he makes a circle in the air with his hand. "Have Adinaeth circle. This time he'll take the envision from you, and I'll double check it. Same thing, though, just go between and come back out, got it?"

Away from Kilaueth, Adinaeth's neck> L'alie dips her head as Adinaeth lets one wing drag into the air current, bringing them about in a broad circle. She shuts her eyes for a moment, passing the image to Adinaeth, who in turn shuttles it back to the bronzerider.

Niva watches the pair circle, keeping an eye on them as Kilaueth rumbles her own pleasure in their achievement, before quieting back down. O'era hms for a moment and nods. "Hold that envision, on the count of three, go between. One. Two. Three."

Away from Kilaueth, L'alie lets out a loud whoop of enthusiasm as she reemerges, and then sways in an alarming sort of way. "I don't think I like this." She says, fingers white around her knees.

Niva arches an eyebrow as she watches from a distance, Kilaueth moving closer as the weyrling seems to sway. O'era instinctively reaches to curl his fingers around her shoulders, leaning forward so his words aren't lost. "Are you okay?" Glancing over to the hovering gold, he motions towards the ground. "I think this is enough for today, I'm sure the Weyrwoman would agree. Tell Adi to take us down, nice and slow."

Away from Kilaueth, Kilaueth backwings gently, careful not to bump her rider around too much, crouching low to make the dismount easier. Niva slides carefully to the ground, waiting for the brown to land as well, gaze on the trio anxiously, O'era on Adinaeth's back keeping a careful watch on L'alie all the while.
Away from Kilaueth, Adinaeth lands with grace, showing off a little bit. L'alie scrubs her face as soon as the brown touches down, "Oh, that's unnerving." she mutters.

Niva moves to the brown's side as he lands, glancing up at L'alie with a rather concerned expression on her face. "Are you alright?" A blink and she tilts her head. "What's unnerving?" O'era remains atop the brown, attention still trained cautiously on the weyrling. They will not incur S'ver's wrath for overworking one of his weyrlings.

L'alie grunts, "Going between with the knowledge that I might not come out on the other side." She thumps to the ground, and then throws a smile at Niva and O'era, "I promise I'm fine."

Niva arches an eyebrow as she watches L'alie for another long moment before nodding her head. "Might I still suggest a hot mug of klah, or something else if you prefer, and a bit of something sweet it eat. It'll help cure the nerves." O'era dismounts after L'alie, pausing to give the brown a grateful thump on the leg.
