Adelasa Visits

Xanadu Weyr - Caverns

A massive cavern in it's own right, this one has been skillfully adapted for human habitation. The high ceilings have been painted a light, soft ivory, as are the walls where numerous tapestries hang to provide brilliant colour and insulation from the stone. The floor has been left in its natural state, pale pink granite speckled through with glittering mica and dark flecks of basalt, leveled carefully but kept sufficiently rough to avoid slips.
The cavern itself is loosely divided into areas, each one set up to be suitable for some segment of the Weyr's population. The most frequently occupied area, however, is the one near the Kitchens where tables of varying sizes provide a place to sit down and eat or chat and a buffet of consumables is almost always kept stocked. Its plain that on most days, this area wouldn't accommodate anywhere near the full population of the Weyr and equally plain that on such occasions when a formal meal is laid out, tables are appropriated from all the other areas.
A big fireplace is set into the wall near the Kitchens as well, several comfortable chairs nearby providing haunts for elderly residents or riders who like a good view of all that happens. Rugs cover the floor in strategic spots, all of them abstract or geometric in design and most in the softly neutral colours of undyed wool.
Exits lead off in all directions, a big archway the largest and that leading outside. Shallow stairs to the west lead to the offices and administration area while tunnels to the east lead to the infirmary, kitchen and resident's quarters. Southwards, a sloping tunnel leads down to the hot springs and southwest is a wide tunnel, carefully roped off to avoid accidents.

Niva has settled herself into one of the comfortable chairs near the hearth, where a small fire burns despite the warm but gusty weather outside. A footstool has been pulled close as well, upon which the woman's feet are propped, a plate of snacks and a large glass of juice on a table within easy reach as she peers at a paper in her hand.

Stepping unfamiliary into one of the Main Caverns of Xanadu Weyr comes perhaps an expected? Or maybe even unexpected new person at the Weyr. Of course for anyone that saw her on the sands, she does look rather different. Her hair is much shorter and a different color and the dress she wears isn't nearly as daringly cut. It also exposes what look like are scars across her shoulderblades and upper bosom.. Perhaps she's tired of using things to cover up the flaw in her beauty? Only she knows. As it were she is glad for the haircut with the extraordinarily strong breezes around this place and she is glad to have found a place to relax and perhaps find some work.

Niva glances up now and then, momentarily, as people enter and exit the caverns, gaze hovering a moment longer on the unknown girl's entrance before shrugging it off and going back to peering at the hide, absently reaching for her juice, taking a sip and setting the glass back on the table.

A pause and then motion towards one of the drudges brings Lasa towards her ultimate goal. "Excuse me." She asks in a soft even tone. "Where is the Headwoman here? I would like to take up residence at Xanadu.. I feel that my life at Ista hasn't fufilled any promise that perhaps it once had shown." There is a hint of sadness there, a rarely found commodity with Adelasa before the hatching now abundant afterwards. "So that I might take up residence here? I don't need a job, I have enough marks to last.. but I am a sculptress."

Niva turns her attention back to the new arrival as she half-listens to the exchange between the Adelasa and a drudge, arching her eyebrow before waving a hand and raising her voice to get the pair's attention. "Just come here, no need to go bothering Evy, I'm not really doing anything." But, she's still making no move to get out of that chair, or even to take her feet down.

Turning her attention towards the woman and blinking when she notices the knot, Lasa moves over towards her and smiles gently as she turns her attention on the relaxing woman. "I'm here to make a new home for myself." She offers freely before sitting down across from Niva.. "Well, what should I do then?"

Niva watches Adelasa cross the room, eyeing her for a moment before absently waving a hand as she sits down. "Tell me about yourself. I prefer to know if in making a new home yourself, we need to worry about angry residents from your last home appearing."

"Well.." A laugh comes, although it's tone is bitter and short. "Well, indeed.. I could see that. Lets just say that.. I was left alone where I thought I would find company." Lasa answers crypticly, a frown forming for the briefest of moments on her forehead.

Niva arches an eyebrow as she watches her for a moment, "Might I assume you come from Ista, then? I was told one of our riders had returned with a tag-along." She shifts in the chair, slouching a bit lower as the hide is stuck down the side of her chair next to her.

"Yes, well." Adelasa offers, grinning. "I didn't feel right at Ista anymore." She offers.. "Not after.. well.. you know." She points to herself. "My name is Lasa." She tells her, her eyebrow raising slightly as she watches Niva's reactions to her words.

Niva nods slowly, managing a bit of a grin as she does so. "I can understand that." A inclination of her head and she smiles. "As long, Lasa, as you don't decide to make yourself a companion as a replacement. You're certainly welcome here, but I expect you to act responsibly, and do your share, artistic contributor or no.."

"A companion as a replacement?" Lasa seems lsot by this. "I don't understand what you mean?" She asks, frowning as she looks towards Niva, the ghost of a smile turning downwards as she all but orders her to do things. "of course, I'll make sure that I'm profitable for the Weyr." That said a bit sarcasticly.

Niva waggles a finger at her, with a bit of a grin at the confusion. "You can't be that much younger then me. However, I don't recommend doing what I seem to be in the midst of." And a hand is rested absently on her visibly round abdomen. An arched eyebrow and she shakes her head. "Just expect to be recruited for hunts or other… excursions."

"I see, to be with a child then eh?" Lasa notices the swelling and a smile turns upwards on her face. "I'm twenty turns." A tilt of the head comes at the finger waggling and she does laugh, genuinely. "I've never been with a man, so that isn't going to be a problem… and hunts?" She asks, sounding.. surprised?

Niva inclines her head, in an attempt to confer the correctness of that guess. "Indeed.." A grin and she shakes her head. "Then its only 4 turns. So, you're a bit older then I was when I Impressed Kilaueth, and I'd been with C'ian for a while. I'd wager that it won't take you too long to find someone." A wink and she nods her head quickly. "O'course. Felines, on occasion, when they get too bad. But, before a hatching, we tend to go out of the weyr to hunt."

Adelasa's face goes a bit of a blanch at the mention of a hatching and she nods, fingering an errand chip of a mark on the table. "I don't know if I'd like to go back out there again, to be honest. Is it true that once your searched that means your dragon is out there? Or is that just some old runnerkeeper's tale to keep the candidates that don't impress from going insane with the grief?"

Niva shakes her head quickly. "Not at all… If you're Searched, then the dragon saw potential in you. And, that means there's always the possibility that your dragon is waiting for you, if you're on the Sands for it." And she manages a bit of a smile. "There are other things to focus on, though, if you'd rather not face it again."

"Perhaps, perhaps.. but I would feel… awfull if I wasn't on the sands and then one of the eggs failed to hatch because I was too arrogant or to stupid to not give it a chance at life." The young woman counters. "It's a hard decision to make, and it's one that I think will take time."

Niva shakes her head slightly with a grin. "The eggs will hatch whether or not you're there. And, what most likely would happen is that dragon finds another that it can bond to, other then yourself. Its a game of chance, if you decide to stand or not, and your dragon is there." A sure nod, and she inclines her head. "Indeed it is."

Adelasa nods her head as well before she leans back against the chair that she is sitting on. "Then why do some not hatch?" She asks, her eyes flicking around the area, trying to take the new surroundings in. "Why does it hurt to be left out there? Nothing has changed.. but yet everything has."

Niva shakes her head slightly. "Some just don't hatch… There's something wrong with them, or something got to them. Some people say its a sign of worse things to come, especially if there's more then just one." Shaking her head some more, she manages a bit of a smile. "Because it seems at first that you're going to find the other part, but then you don't. And, I understand it hurts, because its not what you expect. Its not what you've gotten used to."
