Trying His Luck

Xanadu Weyr – Beach

The unerring range of subdued white rises and falls in a multitude of sandy dunes, creating an endless amount of tiny valleys constantly demolished and rebuilt by the frequent arrival or departure of a dragon. Smoothing out as it slopes gently to the edge of the deep blue water, the sand darkens and a shell here and there stands out for children to collect. The beach itself is set along a low cliff - the height lessoning as one heads eastwards, blocking a portion of the beach from direct access.

The wide wide stretch of water opens up to the east, the far distant shore way beyond the horizon and the beach curves ever so slowly round to east and west, distant arms of land embracing the wind-ruffled Caspian Lake. East leads up to the mouth of the Rubicon River, where the protecting cliff is merely an arms length higher then the sand, and beyond that, a winding road leading out of Xanadu's territory. Westwards, the beach narrows as the cliff swings out, leaving a path wide enough for dragons in single file before cutting in to the sheltered cove designated the Weyrling Beach. However, cut in the cliff face to the north are a variety of rough, wide staircases, providing access to the clearing and to the meadow.

The sun has set and the stars and moons have come out, brightening the beach with a silvery glow. Crouched down near the tide line is a boy, dressed in tan trousers, barefoot, with a pale blue short sleeved tunic. He's crouched low, so might be difficult to find, though the plunk, plunk, plunk of stones might give him away as he tosses them into the water.

Even though the sun and the beach is all but deserted, the slender shape of a young girl can be seen making her way down to the beach a small back carried over her back. Humming soflty to herself as she approaches the water n-talya begins to lay out a blanket and down on the sand before she notices the young boy near by, "Oh Hi there." she calls out.

Muir turns her head sharply at the approach of another, and seeing a girl he smiles a bit. "Hi," he says, pushing to his feet and brushing his hands off on his pants. "How're you? Going to do some moon bathing?" he asks, grin rakish and crooked as he pushes hair away from his face.

Natalya giggles a bit at the rakish grin and says, "I was thinking about going for a swim yes." he smiles, "Ive been studying all day and thought it would be a good way to relax."

Muir nods, slipping his hands into his pockets and taking a moment to look her up and down. "Well," he says, "don't stop on my account." Pretty girl swimming? Yes please. "I'm Muir," he says then, extending a hand. "What're you studying that takes so much of your time and causes so much stress?"

Natalya giggles and says softly, "Not so much stress there is just alot to learn before I can find my partner." she looks out to the water and smiles, "Im Natalya… I am studying to be a dolphineer." as she speaks she begins to get ready to swim, pulling her sundress off, to reveal a bathing suit worn beneath it.

Muir sits down in the sand as she begins to undress, and the teen boy is not shy in admiring her as she does so. "Ahhh. That's neat. Nice to meet you, Natalya. You're quite pretty, if you don't mind me saying so. When do dolphineers get their partners?"

Natalya blushes and says, "Well we have to study hard and start working with the pod and whell, they sorta pick us out."

Muir grins crookedly, her blush only feeding his youthful ego. "Do they always pick the prettiest girls?" Might as well push things, right? If she laughed the first time, she'll just keep laughing. Isn't that how this works?

Natalya blushes brightly and says softly, "Im not that pretty…" glancing at the boy shyly. "And there are plenty of boys in the craft as well.

Muir leans back on his arms, bracing his hands against the sand. "I think you're pretty," he says. Just in case she didn't get that. "Oh?" And then he just shrugs, as if he could care less about the boys. "Dolphincraft's a good craft. I've seen them out and doing things, rescuing people, that sort of stuff. Is that what you want to do? Save folks?"

Natalya nods and says, "That is part of it, yes. though it will be turns before I am ready to do that." she does smiles at the comment about how pretty she is though, immediately charmed by Muirs brashness.

Muir nods his head again, and then motions towards the sea. "Don't not swim on my account," he says, grinning at her. "I'll just wait here if you want to go swim for a while. I'll watch your stuff." How kind of him.

Natalya smiles and says softly, "Thank you." and begins to stand moving towards the water slowly

Muir watches her go, and happily! He even whistles a bit at her. Charming? Or chauvinistic? It's hard to tell, but he's only 14 after all. Then he lays back in the sand, tucking his hands behind his head and sighing softly as he gazes up at the stars. A worried frown creases his brows and he shifts, wiggling a bit to get comfortable.

Natalya dives out into the water, swiming a short distance out before poping up for air and looking back to shore and the strange young boy on the beach.

Muir is still laying there, staring up at the stars. And listening for cries for help, of course. Because it's dangerous to swim alone.

Natalya swims for only a few minutes, working the kinks of the day out in the water before returning to shore. "you really don't have sit around here for me…"

Muir pushes himself back up to a sitting position when she returns, and he smiles. "Nonsense, this is the best view I've had all day. And it's been a…crazy day. So I'm enjoying it." And he even winks at her, shaking sand off his palm before he fixes his hair again. "You from here?"

Natalya shakes her head slowly and says, "No I was born in High Reaches, my family recently moved here." she smiels and move to sit on her towel.

Muir tilts his head a bit, studying her more closely. "Yeah? I was up near Reaches for the last four months or so. If you're from Reaches, how'd you get interested in Dolphincrafting?"

Natalya smilse and says softly, "When we first got here a couple of month ago i went swimming and ended up in the middle of the pod out there." her eyes light up in wonder, "They are the most wonderful creatures….

Muir glances out towards the sea, squinting his brown eyes to see if he can spot any dolphins tonight. "They are neat," he agrees, "but not as wonderful as dragons." There's a bit of pride in his voice there, but then the boy sighs and shrugs, laying back in the sand again to stare up at the stars, hands tucked once more behind his head. "S'nice you've got your life all planned out."

Natalya nods and says softly, "I didn't know what I was going to do until then. though, you will figure it out."

Muir shrugs, turning his head to look at her. "I want to be a dragonrider. Or I did. Then I was going to be a holder. But now…I just don't know." Rubbing his hand over his face, he ends up getting sand in his nose and turns, sneezing and rubbing at his eyes. How dignified. At least he turns to sneeze away from her?

Natalya says softly, "Bless you.." as he sneezed and smiles, "you still have time, and you never know you might get searched. there was just a gold flight wasn't there?"

Muir clears his throat, looking a bit…embarrassed? "Yeah…my mom's," he mutters. "So yeah, there's going to be a clutch soon, but…you can't just ask to be searched. And I haven't been searched before this, so I don't know. I just…" And his hand clenches into a fist, and then bangs down against the soft, yielding sand as he sighs. "Just so much going on in my head right now. You're a nice, pretty distraction."

Natalya says, "Maybe it was just not time yet…." she blinks and says, "Your mom is the weyrwoman?"

Muir nods, glancing over at her again. "Yeah, Thea. Well, actually, I…there might've been another flight. I've been gone. But my mom's Thea. Her clutch just hatched. Today, I think. This morning. And I wasn't here to see it, or to even…be there just in case…" He exhales a sigh, long suffering as he is.

Natalya says, "Don't give up on your dreams, just have backup plans." she giggles.

Muir laughs, and there's a hint of bitterness to it. "I had one. Didn't like it, but I had it, and then it was taken away from me. So I don't know what to feel." Grabbing a handful of sand, he tosses it away from them both to watch the grains scatter across the moonlit beach. "Dreams…they're not really useful things. Just get your hopes up. Life changes so fast, you never know what's gonna happen." Jaded at 14.

Natalya smiles and says, "Well if you had gotten searched and impressed today you wouldn't have been meeting pretty girls right?"

Muir looks over at her, and then he laughs. And it's genuine, and truly amused. "Okay, okay, point taken," he says with a crooked smile. "No pretty girls, no dancing, no kissing, no flirting. So yeah, you're right about that at least."

Natalya smiles, "take each day as it comes, you may end up with better then you have even dreamed."

Muir shrugs, "We'll see," he says quietly. "Just hard sometimes…" Giving her another faint smile, he turns to look out at the ocean once again. "Sure is nice to have the ocean back tho. This ocean. I missed it while we were gone. Missed a lot of things but the ocean…it's very…you know. Calming. Or something."

Natalya nods and says, "Yeah I know… thats why I came out to swim." she smiles and reaches over to pat Muir's shoulder lightly.

Muir stiffens slightly beneath her hand, turning his head to look at her. And then he smiles a little bit, reaching up to take her hand if he lets her, and give it a squeeze. "You're as nice as you are pretty."

Natalya blushes and says soflty, "I try to be. I never understood peopel that aren't nice to each other…"

Muir will keep on holding her hand until she pulls it away. His touch is loose enough, hands lightly calloused but not too rough. "Not everyone is as nice as you."

Natalya smiles and says, "They should be. you seem to be."

Muir chuckles softly, giving her hand a squeeze. "I'm glad you think that." He doesn't agree - or disagree! - with her.

Natalya smiles and says, "I mean, you stayed out here to watch my stuff for me, to watch out to make sure I was ok while I was swimming right?"

Muir nods, "Well sure, but you're a pretty girl in a bathing suit. How could I not want to stick around?" He's honest, at least?

Natalya blushes and says, "Well there are plenty of pretty girl around here…"

Muir looks around the empty beach. "Right now you're the only one, doll," he says with a wink, giving her hand a squeeze. "Want to take a walk with me?"

Natalya smiles and nods, "Sure. I am new around here still and don't really know my way around.."

Muir smiles brightly, pushing to his feet and offering her a hand up. "Oh? Well I'm an expert, since I grew up here. I can show you all the best places. Come on," he beckons, leading her down the shore.

Natalya smiels and stands taking that offered hand and following along with Muir, "The best places like what?"

Muir shrugs, "Oh, some of the nicest places to see the sunrise, or catch spiderclaws, or climb trees. What else are you interested in other than dolphins?"

Natalya says softly, "I like music alot…and dancing…" she smiles

Muir grins, "I know the best spots for dancing, too." And with a crooked smile he steps away and lifts her hand with his, in a classic 'twirl for me!' pose.

Natalya giggles and allows him to twirl her about, "Oh you have to show me then."

Muir smiles, continuing to walk once the little twirl is done. "With pleasure. Though it's too late, I don't think anyone will be playing any more tonight. But I'll keep an eye out, and if we're in the same place at the same time as music, we will dance."

Natalya smilse to Muir and says, "I think I would like that." giving his hand a light squeeze.

Muir returns the squeeze, and the smile as he leads her along the beach. "So you're from High Reaches? What brought your family here, from all the way up there?"

Natalya smiles and says, "My mom wanted to move somewhere I could make something of myself…she though I was doomed to be a laundry girl.."

Muir ohs, nodding his head. "So…just picked Xanadu off the map? Or do you have family here or something?"

Natalya says softly, "They never really told me why hear, I know my dad was having issues with the exreme cold thre there…"

Muir glances around with a little frown. "Huh. But it gets cold here too…it's not like Ista or Western. But I'm sure they knew what they were doing," he adds. A little further along the beach he stops, giving her hand another squeeze and motioning to the Sea of Azov. "Now isn't this lovely?" he asks, with the moon and starlight twinkling down over the sand and the sea. "Not as lovely as you, though," he addds. More flattery is always good, right?

Natalya looks out at the sea and says soflty, "I don't know that I can compete with that really." she nods about the cold here, "Yeah it gets cold here but not was bad…"

Muir nods, "Not as bad as Reaches, that's true. I just came from that area earlier today. Hard to believe that this morning I was packing snowballs." Then he chuckles and shrugs. "Well, the sea can't hold my hand, so."

Natalya smiles and nods, "That is true…" she smiles as she contiues to look out to the water as she lets you lead her along.

Muir stops a moment later and turns, leading her back towards her towel. "I think, though, that I should go find my bed for the night, and sleep in it. This was a lovely walk though, thank you Natalya. Hopefully we'll meet again soon?"

Natalya smiles and says, "I will be around." she smiles, "Look for me at the dances…"

Muir stops by their stuff and if she'll let him, he'll lift her hand to gently kiss the back. "I will," he promises, before letting her hand go and turning to leave.

Natalya blushes brightly but smiels at the hand kiss, not pulling away at all."Then it is a date, I will see you soon."
