Just a Cough

Xanadu Weyr - Forest's Edge

forestedge.jpg

While the forest is thick for a long while, in time it begins to thin, as the ground becomes rockier to the south western stretches of the Weyr's land. The trees are further apart, and the rocks become larger, before rocky outcroppings seem to be more prevalent than the trees around them. As the hills begin to gain in height, the shruberry upon them become more stunted.

What's this, though! It seems with all the recent earthshakes from the south, the ground has begun to realign itself, and one hillside has shifted, revealing an opening into a small cave. At least, that's what it appears, as the whole is just large enough for an average sized man to sneak through.

A series of 'dens' sit into the rocky outcroppings, showing signs of the whers who make their home within them.

The darkness of night is fading quickly, time enough that Jansk has shuffled her way off towards her den, and her bed within. Janelle, however, remains out inthe clearning, quietly settled with back against a tree and knees bent. Head lols back against the trunk that supports her, wiht her eyes closed.

Hysk shuffles out of his den alone and waddles up to Janelle and Jansk with a slight whimper.

Janelle is alone, Jansk having retired to her den already. The gentle whimper grabs her attention quickly, however, and her head jumps up suddenly, "Ja- Hysk? Hysk, what's the matter, where's Hyrlon?"

Hysk whimpers again, then Hyrlon emerges. His eyes are bloodshot and he can't hold in a cough after calling for Hysk to return. He doesn't even spot Janelle at first, then he blinks, then coughs again, "Janelle?"

The coughing garners her attention the same time as Hysk's second whimper is put forth. Her hands run over the wher's hide gently, soothing, but it's the human that has her main focus, "Hyr.." she's standing now, and moving towards Hyrlon, "Hyrlon, what's the matter?"

Hyrlon coughs again, then steps back as Janelle approaches, Hysk right behind her, "I don't know if I'm contagious. Don't get too close."

Janelle blinks a little, quietly backing off a bit and knealing beside Hysk. "You're sick.. have you been to the Healers? Can I help some how?" Anything, really, and the concern shows on her features. Without being able to provide any comfort to Hyrlon, instead it's offered towards the wher, in hopes it'll help the man as well.

Hyrlon shakes his head slowly, "No healer… no time…" He coughs again, covering his mouth with his hands, "Any help would be good…"

"Just let me know.." Janelle intones, paying close attention between headknobs on Hysk, "And there's alway stime to worry about you being safe." Then she narrows her eyes, "You and Hysk haven't been out to Ista, about those odd smells, have you?"

Hyrlon nods, "just briefly, but long enough." He coughs again, "Could you… get me some tea… and maybe a healer?"

Janelle purses her lips a little, "If it wasn't work related, I'm going to say any time was too much." One last pet is offered for Hysk, before she stands though, disappearing into her den long enough to make tea, with a "Be right back." Upon her return, she brings a tray with tea, and some dry crackers and meat. "Have you eaten at all?" The tray is left near Hyrlon, then she returns to Hysk's side.

Hyrlon shakes his head, coughing again, "Not for two days. I just can't keep it down. And my eyes burn like nothing else."

Janelle shakes her head a bit, frowning, "Hyrlon, I think you need to go to the Infirmary.. I don't think having the Healer come out here is what you need." she's not a healer, though, herself. "Try the crackers, at least.. "

Hyrlon nods, nibbling lightly on a cracker, "Hysk. Den." Hysk gives an unhappy little whimper and follows Hyr's instruction. Hyr blinks, wiping some tears from his eyes, "Take me there?"

Janelle nods slowly, "Of course." she's oging t oh ave to get close though, if she's going to offer support. And no amount of telling her no is going to work. Not now, at least. "There's bad air in there, isn't there?" At Ista, that is, "Have you bathed it off since you went?" she hooks her arm around his back if he'll let her, hopin ghe'll hook his ove rher shoulders.

Hyrlon nods slowly, "Very bad air… but it's not the explosive kind. I bathed as soon as I got back. Bathed Hysk too." He leans on her, for support with a gentle sigh, "I don't know what it could be, though…"

Janelle frowns a bit, "Someone needs to find out what, and where it's coming from." Then, one foot moves ahead of the other, and she begins the slow pace towards the infirmary, keeping it as even and smooth as she can, to avoid jostling Hyrlon.

Hyrlon stumbles some, but he manages to stay on his feet, "It's coming from down. That's all Hysk could tell me."

Janelle nods, "Down. And not knowing what it is that's down, drilling isn't a smart idea I'm guessing." With each stumble, any misplaced step, Janelle's there to catch him, to support him, and to coax him that little bit farther. "Let's just focus on getting you better, righ tnow.."

Hyrlon shakes his head, turning away from her to cough, "No. Drilling would be bad." He nods, blinking his eyes rapidly to clear them, "Yes… healer…"

Xanadu Weyr - Infirmary

The infirmary here is intended for human care. It is spotless and smells of disinfectant, cots are lined up against one wall, a curtain can be pulled to give some privacy to the occupants of the cots if they so desire. A cabinet stands off against another wall, instruments and medications stored against when they will be needed. A couple of curtained off beds are used for examinations of patients and the treatment of minor injuries which won't require long term care. A desk with chair is just off of the doorway for the healer to sit and catch up on record keeping after a long days work.

Janelle leads the way along the paths until the clearin gopens before them. She'll stop for breaks whenever needed, but they'll only be momentary until they arrive, finally, at the infirmary. "Here we are.."

Hyrlon collapses into an infirmary bed as soon as he gets near enough to one and croaks something that sounds like 'water'.

The nearest healer will be flaged, about the same time that the bed is claimed. "he needs help.. Was at Ista recently, with their foul smell, investigating. Has bathed, but hasn't been able to keep anything down since. He's coughing, weak, and appears to be having issues with his eyes. ..And he's asking for some water."

Water is brought and Hyrlon gulps greedily at it, "Probably methane poisoning…" His eyes begin to water and he coughs again.

Janelle nods slowly, "What he said." about the methane poisoning. "Hysk seems relatively unaffected, save for concern for Hyrlon, that is. We're Wherhandlers.. Minercraft." just in case that wasn't clear. Then she'll wait, for the healer to do whatever he needs to.

The healer starts his work, checking eyes, throat and nose before administering a pinch of an herb to Hyrlon's water. The examination make's Hyr start a few times, apparently his skin is sensitive, "I'll be fine… just need… rest…" cough, cough, hack

Janelle shakes her head some, watching as the healer goes about his work, "I don't htink that's all you need, Hyrlon.." she reaches for his hand, in hopes of cradling it in her own. "Somethings going on, and we need to figure it out." the two miners, the healer, whoever, "For you, ad nayone else that's been in there."

Hyrlon's hand is clammy, but there. He coughs again, then mutters, "Just a cold… smelled like gas…"

"It'd be too much coinsidence for me, Hyr," Janelle points out gently, clasping her hands around his. "I'm sure there's more to it than that."

Hyrlon shrugs weakly, waiting for the healer's medicine to take effect, "No one there is sick… just the bad smell. Must've… complicated…"

Janelle raises her brow slowly, "I doubt that most there have gone as far as you.. and who knows how long they've been exposed ot it, in what dosage.."

Hyrlon nods, gulping down more water while the healer does such wonderful things as testing his heart rate and breathing, "compl'cation. 'Sall…" He sneezes, barely managing to cover his mouth and nose in time, "jus' a compl'cation."

Janelle shushes him gently, squeezing his head, "You said you need some rest.. Do that now, take the time you've got. I'll let the craft know." she's not going to argue with a sick man, no matter how she feels about him. Instead, she starts to hum quietly, with periodic "Just relax, Hyr.."

Hyrlon nods, his eyes closing as he drifts off towards sleep, his hand giving hers one last squeeze.

Janelle waits long enough to be sure that Hyrlon's asleep, before looking to the healer. "It isn't just a cold, is it?" she intones bluntly, the soft tones left for the sleeping man.

The healer shakes his head slowly, "Pneumonia." He raises a hand to forestall protestations, "Probably had a cold before he went to Ista. He'll be fine, but he needs to rest and drink a lot of fluid and take this." He hands her a packet of herbs, "as a tea thrice daily until he's better."

Janelle accepts the packet graciously, "Is there a timeframe? I'm sure our masters are going to want to know how long he'll be down for." She glances to him, then back up again at the healer. "Two weeks, maybe?"

The healer nods, "If he heals well, 2 weeks. If he doesn't… could be as much as a month or more."

Janelle frowns brifely, "That long. What else, other than lots of fluids, and this tea? ANything else specific?"

The healer nods, "Make sure he clears anything he coughs up. And if it gets worse, bring him back immediately. Pneumonia can get really bad if not treated properly."

Janelle nods slowly, "So, really, he's going to need someone nearby for the next while, isn't he?" intones the aprentice miner, "I mean.. he's not going tohave the strength to get up and make himself his tea for a bit."

The healer nods, "I'd assumed you were together? He'll be safe alone for short periods of time, but no longer than a few hours."

Janelle nods a little, "We.. Well, we are, but we don't live together.." Well, they haven't, at least.. "I mean, our dens are basically right next door anyways.. It won't be a problem, though.. I'm sure it won't.." Her gaze falls to watch the rising and falling of Hyrlon's chest quietly.

Hyrlon continues to breath with labor, but he's not getting any worse, at least. The healer nods, "I doubt he'll mind you caring for him. And no need to explain your relationship to me. I'm just a healer."

Janelle nods slowly, "I don't know of anyone he'd rather.." Though his mother'd probably prefer *She* was doing it. "And I can care for hysk, too, while I'm there."

The healer grins and nods, "I'm sure that will work well for both of you." He takes a few notes on a clipboard, "If you need more of the tea, please come back and get it. He shouldn't miss a dose until he can go an entire day without rest."

Janelle nods some, "And you said that's three times daily?" she just wants to be sure, is all really.

The healer nods, "Trice, preferrably with food."

Janelle nods slowly, "I'll be sure he gets it."

The healer nods, "good. Let me know if you need anything else."

"I will," Janelle promises, all the same turning her gaze back to the laboured sleeping Hyrlon.

Hyrlon flops, rolling in his sleep. The healer follows her glance, "It's safe to move him once he wakes. Can you heat his den?"

Janelle nods some, "It'll be warm, I'll be sure of it."

The healer nods, "Good."
