Just in Time for Dinner

Xanadu Weyr - Caverns
A massive cavern in it's own right, this one has been skillfully adapted for human habitation. The high ceilings have been painted a light, soft ivory, as are the walls where numerous tapestries hang to provide brilliant color and insulation from the stone. The floor has been left in its natural state, pale pink granite speckled through with glittering mica and dark flecks of basalt, leveled carefully but kept sufficiently rough to avoid slips.
The cavern itself is loosely divided into areas, each one set up to be suitable for some segment of the Weyr's population. The most frequently occupied area, however, is the one near the Kitchens where tables of varying sizes provide a place to sit down and eat or chat and a buffet of consumables is almost always kept stocked. Its plain that on most days, this area wouldn't accommodate anywhere near the full population of the Weyr and equally plain that on such occasions when a formal meal is laid out, tables are appropriated from all the other areas.
A big fireplace is set into the wall near the Kitchens as well, several comfortable chairs nearby providing haunts for elderly residents or riders who like a good view of all that happens. Rugs cover the floor in strategic spots, all of them abstract or geometric in design and most in the softly neutral colors of undyed wool.

It's food time! The tables have been set, the first wave of hungry weyrfolk has already come to gather their plates and sit down at the tables, and more are coming in for dinner all the time. Soriana's gotten here early today, and she's already sitting down at a table with a plate in front of her - and a gold firelizard perched next to it. One claw reaches out toward the wherry. "…no, Haruhi," Sori says. The gold glances up at her, and chirps indignantly. Soriana just stares, until at last the gold squeaks and turns away to curl up. She didn't want that anyhow.

You can call Candia a lot of things, but never late for dinner, especially when she's visiting Xanadu and Mama Denna's wonderful cooking. The roving brownrider wanders in, grinning as she waves to familiar faces, many of them members of her /very/ large family, and makes her way towards the serving tables. Unfortunately, she's followed, specifically by a large, snuffling brown snout. Yup, where Candia goes, there's Cinrath. And where food can be smelled, he's there as well…

The gold firelizard by Soriana's plate (not looking at it. Why would she care about it?) lifts up her head at the sight of the brown. The wherry is actually and truly forgotten, and the gold lifts up her head to chirp! This has two effects. The first is that Soriana looks up and around to find a dragon trying to infiltrate. The second is that a brown firelizard pops out above Sori's head and lands on her shoulder to look confused at the gold.

Idrissa is late to dinner, imagen that! Everyone that knows her has gotten use to this, save her pair of firelizards that are chirping and wrabling out at her. Willow is perched upon her head, the green picking and pulling at the girls hair, while Ripley, a rather darkly colored blue is busy chewing against her shirt, *chompchewchompchew* "Ripley, knock it out." Rissa grumbleds as she is making her way towards the cave entrance and turns her head back in time to see…a brown dragon poking his head into cave? Oh dear… "Hello…" Is sent towards the brown, which is Cinrath, the girls bright green gaze flick around a moment before she is looking back at the dragon.

Candia hears the chirp, and looks behind her. "Cinrath," she says in an exasperated voice, her expression resigned and long suffering. As if it's a magic word, the brown's name summons one more person, specifically Denna, who's expression is equally as exasperated and long suffering, as the petite baker master comes out, wielding her spoon. "Cinrath, get out of here! I'll bring you some out to the clearing. You know the rules." Abashed, the brown snout withdraws, although not before crooning softly to Idrissa…

Haruhi stands up, flicking gold wings. Chirp! she declares, and the brown on Soriana's shoulder just gives a little siiiigh-croon. Sori watches Cinrath as he's chased away, and giggles. She glances to the baker doing the final chasing, and… "Dragon with a sweet tooth, huh?" It could be meat pies, sure, but pastries are funnier. While she's at it, oh hey, there's Idrissa. She waves!

Idrissa offers a smile up to the brown, a slight wiggle of her fingers seen in a way before she moves along and on into the cavern. "Hey Soriana." Is called out once she catches sight of her friend. Willow flutters off and zooms on over to the table where Sori and the other two firelizards are, a soft warbling greeting offered to Toral and Haruhi. Ripley doesn't seem too impressed and is still chewing against his persons shirt.

Candia shakes her head. "Actually, it's more that he's curious to try everything, and he always has suggestions on how to improve it." Denna nods. "Not only that, but he's actually got a talent. I made him an honorary Bakercrafter turns ago, on the condition that he stops doing this." With that, the Baker retreats, chuckling softly. Candia, for her part, sighs, as she gets her food, then looks for somewhere to sit.

The gold and brown firelizards make their greetings with Willow, and even Ripley doesn't escape, for Haruhi sends a mind-flicker of hello to him. Soriana pays them no mind, at this point, simply listening to Candia and Denna instead. "Huh. Well. I suppose dragons would have a rather different perspective on how things taste!"

Willow croons out to both gold and brown and then is quickly eyeing Soriana's place, a soft chirp escaping her, wondering what is there! Ripley perks some at the little greeting and sends one back while he looks around as if just figuring out they are someplace else. Idrissa grins slightly as she hears the bit on the brown dragon that wanted to get into cavern. "Sounds rather interesting." Still, dinnertime means she hsould be getting foods! Rissa moves on that way to get herself a plate and food upon it!

Candia can't help giggling slightly. "You'd think so, but as Mama Denna said, he's got an amazing nose and palate when it comes to flavors that we humans enjoy. I've never seen anything like it. Mind you, after twenty turns, it gets a bit tiresome having to chase him out of kitchens and dining halls all over Pern."

Soriana smiles. "Oh, I didn't mean /bad/ different." Soriana grins. "Just different. Seeing something differently is good, sometimes. Lets you find things you would've missed otherwise." She reaches out to pet Haruhi's back lightly as she speaks. "Have y'tried letting him cook himself? I mean, y'could set up a big open air thing…"

Idrissa has a plate of food stuffs, a mug of unhot cider and she is over sitting upon a chair next to Soriana. Ripley hops down and snatches a bit of wherry from the plate and is busy chewing on a piece of it. She glances to Soriana and then over to Candia while grinning. "That would be something to see."

Candia grins as she settles down near the two girls. "Oh, Denna's let him direct the kitchen a few times. It's really quite amazing how well he does. Although the first time was a bit of a disaster. She had an apprentice here who was just about as clumsy as you could ever imagine…

Soriana nods, listening and taking the chance to eat while she does. Haruhi's still pretending not to notice Sori's plate - oh, but here's Idrissa's. The gold hops over and croon-headbutts against Ripley before stretching out her long neck to steal a bit of his human's food for herself. "Never mind that," says Soriana, grinning. "Imagine puttin' him in charge of a Gather tent, where everyone can see!"

Idrissa peers at Haruhi and smirks faintly, she pulls out another bit of wherry and offers it too the girl. She likes to share with the firelizards it seems. Ripley croons out at the headbutting and leans over to faintly nuzzle at the gold, he was about to offer up his piece of meat but there is one for the gold so he quickly finishes his bit! "I bet everyone would come to see that. Be a good way to bring attention to something. Call him the 'Cooking Dragon of Pern'."

Candia thinks for a moment. "I might well have to suggest that to Denna. It'd certainly appeal to her whimsical side." Suddenly, she laughs. "And Cinrath definitely likes the idea. Oh, I'm not sure we've met. I'm Candia Walk, rider of… well, you've already met Cinrath.

Haruhi trills approvingly, taking the wherry and nibbling it daintly after nuzzling Ripley. Sori glances over to them and shakes her head slightly, then back to Candia to grin and nod. "I'm Soriana. Grade one dragonhealer, here at Xanadu. Nice t'meet you."

Idrissa grins at Haruhi and picks up her mug taking a sip from it while her gaze turns back to Candia and Soriana. "Nice to meet you. I'm Idrissa, Beastcraft Apprentice, also here at Xanadu." Ripley croons out softly, his normal grumpy behavior seeming to getting pushed to the side for the moment.

Candia smiles. "It's nice to meet both of you. I don't get down here anywhere near as often as I should, although Faranth knows I have plenty of opportunity. So, have either of you been here at Xanadu for long?

Soriana smiles, and nods. "Oh, well, few turns at this point, I guess." She shrugs, with that timelessness of a teenager for whom all times are practically forever. "So where are you from?"

Idrissa points towards Soriana as she chews on a bite of roasted tubers. "We've been here about the same time. I sorta followed her." This said with an amused tone.

Candia smiles. "Well, I was born at Eastern, but mom, my sister, and I traveled as she was posted from weyr to weyr. I impressed up at the Reaches, but after graduating I went independent, and have been ever since." At the mention of Idrissa following Soriana, she grins. "So, best friends in other words, and sticking together no matter what?"

Soriana laughs. "So… from everywhere, is what you're telling me?" she says to Candia, then shrugs. "Well, that or she was just sooo tired of her own cothold she was willing to take any excuse to leave!" …still grinning.

Idrissa ohs osftly while she looks to Candia, a smile seen and she nods before a curious glance is flicked back to Soriana and a soft laugh escapes her. "I wanted to see a Weyr. Wasn't really able to go and check any out. So when Soriana here left I figured I would follow. I suppose we're sorta of /friends/…" This said while she eyes Soriana playful like.

Candia grins. "I guess you could say that. And believe me, I understand completely about wanting to see new places. Part of me wishes I'd been born a hundred turns ago, when we were still exploring Southern…although I don't like the idea of Threadfall

Soriana grins to Idrissa, and leans back in her chair before she looks to Candia and shakes her head. "I wouldn't want Thread, not at all. I've seen the pictures of what it can do."

Idrissa chuckles and nods to Candia. "It was rather interesting, getting out and seeing new things." Not like she's been /that/ far since coming to Xanadu but still! A faint face is seen at the talk of Thread. "Well, luckly we only have to read about it in books and don't have to worry about it."

Candia nods. "Still, there's a lot of places out there to explore, where we've barely even been. Plenty of room to settle down, not that I ever will.

Soriana laughs. "You're just gonna keep roaming forever?" she asks Candia, and has another couple of bites to eat. "Seems like eventually, you'd get tired of it."

Idrissa ponders while she watches Canida curiously. "So, you just go wandering all the time?" She questions, a glance sent towards Soriana and then back to Candia as she ponders this.

Candia laughs. "Well, I haven't after seventeen turns." She nods at
Idrissa's question. "Yes. I make the occasional marks here and there as a transport rider, but the wanderlust runs in the family. Trader blood, after all.

Soriana shrugs, spreading her hands, and grins. "Maybe y'won't! Maybe you'll just keep on flying until y'fall out of the sky one day." She has another bite, and nods. "Transport when y'happen to want to go that way anyhow?"

Idrissa looks amused as she hears Soriana at the comment about them falling out of the sky. She munches on a bite of cheesyroll while she leans back curious to the answer. "What all do you transport?"

Candia smiles. "Anything and everything, as long as it doesn't harm anyone. And I'll go pretty much anywhere, even if it's out of my way. It's one of the best ways to see Pern, after all

Soriana nods. "Do you even have a way? Or is it just… whatever looks neat tomorrow?" She grins a bit, and tears up her bread to finish getting juices and eating.

Idrissa huhs softly at the thought and glances over to Soriana. "How about that thought. Going all over Pern, seeing everything." This seems to be interesting to Rissa!

Candia nods. "Actually, much of the time, that's precisely it. Wherever the winds take us. Of course, I also have to make sure I keep traveling rations, and I do like to visit my family as well. That's why I'm at Xanadu, actually. Not just Mama Denna, but Uncle T'maz and Aunt Shellie, plus a few friends are here.

Soriana nods. "Well, I hope you enjoy your visit!" She pushes her plate back and stands. "I better get going, I've got to finish some stuff up before tomorrow." She waves, and starts off out of the caverns.

Candia finishes up the last of her food, and smiles. "It was nice meeting you both, and thank you. I hope I'll see you young ladies around the weyr while I'm here.
