Xanadu Weyr - Wanderin' Wherry Tavern
It is often whispered, in the crowds that converge here, that a certain Weyrleader was asked what he wanted in the remodeling of the pub that was not so long ago given a refreshing. He muttered back over the rim of his ever-present mug, "I don't care what you do with the place, just so long as there is plenty of ale." With that in mind, cask after cask of ale lines the walls of the tavern, the remodeler's idea of a jest. As they age, the casks bring a real rustic atmosphere to the pub, along with the deeply wooden flavor that seems to be the theme throughout.
The lighting is dim, as it should be in all good pubs, and the tables and chairs are plentiful. A long mahogany bar, intricately carved with runner beasts, stands vigilant duty at the head of the bar, lined with stools for those patrons that seek the bartender's company. Behind it are drinks for those not inclined toward ale, as well as a door leading to the small kitchen where snacks are made and a back room that probably holds yet more ale.
Mud. Why does mud always follow the snowmelt! Because Spring has arrived in Xanadu. Giving her booted feet another scrape to swipe a little more mud off, Kera tries to dislodge excess rain right at the door before moving too far into the tavern. When she deems herself dry…er, the greenhealer sidesteps quickly to let a waitress pass. Poor woman, those pitchered trays look heavy. Eyes light on a table and she plonks down in a seat, already flagging down a waitress.
Kyra has been here for a little while, ever since she came along with some other people to get something to eat. She's not drinking any of the decidedly prolific ale that the tavern seems so proud of, just nomming some fried tubers and watching a table nearby play a game of cards. She recognizes Kera when she comes in and lifts a hand to give her a wave, grinning a little bit just before popping another tuber into her mouth. Nawm.
Kera catches the waitress and orders a meal and a pitcher of spiced cider. Food's ordered and she takes a moment to look around as she starts shrugging out of her wet jacket. Spotting a face among the crowd, she does a double take, even leaning forward and squinting her eyes at Kyra chomping away on tubor crisps. "Kyra?" Waiting barely a second or two, she smirks "They expect customers to where shoes in here, you know that right?" Kera makes a point of peering down to the floor and peers back up with a smirk, waving to visitor over if she wants. "Plenty of room here if ya wanna join me?"
Kyra stretches her foot out, showing she is wearing a decent pair of boots for dealing with snow, slush, and mud, pulling a bit of a face afterwards. She picks up her plate and drink and meanders over to sit near Kera when she's invited over like that, tucking her chair neatly under her and nibbling on another tuber in the process, "It's not terribly interesting in here, really, now that everyone's left. I'm glad someone else I know showed up."
Kera nods approvingly at the booted feet and glances around the tavern, an agreeable cant of her head with Kyra's observation "I think it's supposed to get more interesting after a few mugs of ale, or you happen to be winning all the marks." Fingers flick towards the card players, and the wobbly customers enjoying their drinks and conversations before turning her attention back to Kyra "But the tavern does grill up some really tasty herdbeast burgers. Ya can't visit Xanadu's tavern without trying one." The waitress returns with the warm spiced cider, which Kera waste no time filling a mug and sipping.
"Oh, no, the food is good. I had a burger before these," Kyra assures, holding up one of the tuber crisps before it disappears into the short girl's mouth. She picks up her cup, which is full of something fizzy, and takes a long drink before setting it aside. Looking over at the card players, she admits idly, "They're pretty fun to watch. I think I know how to play cards now, anyway."
Kera 's gaze slips around towards the players, eyeing a few cards being tossed about and shrugs "I'ld not wager marks with them on it though." Shaking her head decided she looks back to Kyra "I have to say, I'm surprised to run into you, here of all places." An amused little snort "Saves Mon and me a trip." Warm cider is lifted again to take a sip before she cants a curious look to the short girl "And I'm also impressed with your hunting and tracking skills. To track your brother so far and hunt him down so quickly. Have you seen him yet?"
Kyra shakes her head at the idea of actually betting, wrinkling her freckled nose, "Nah, I wouldn't. Seems like a good way to take something fun and make it something to get angry over." She cocks her head to the side curiously only to snort softly and prop her elbow on the table, "I didn't track Keldan here. If I needed to, it wouldn't be that hard. He was talking to a Xanadu rider during a time Xanadu has eggs on the sand. There's really only one place he could safely be, barring disaster." She takes another drink of her fizz before shaking her head a bit, "No, not really. Mostly to see if there was anything he wanted me to bring from home."
Kera spots the waitress returning with her meal and leans back to allow the woman to place the plate before she hurries off to another customer. "Kera drifts forward, breathing in the delicious steam wafting up from the plate. Kyra's already crunching away on the tubor crisps so Kera doesn't feel guilty for grabbing up the burger and start nibbling away at it. Listening to the short girl, a nod dips her head gently a couple of times. "A good sister. And how about yourself? Bring everything you may need for an extended stay? Kera' may or may not be a little cryptic but shrugs and goes on "Moncerath seems to think we should have headed back to Half Moon to see other interesting finds. In truth, I think had you not run off to your chores the other day, Moncerath may have insisted you come along then." Another bite of her burger is taken and she swipes hands on her pants leg, before she starts fumbling in her pocket.
Kyra probably wouldn't care if she didn't have food and Kera went to town on the burger, of course. She snags the waitress before she has a chance to get away, asking her for some sweet, hot milk, then goes back to eating absentmindedly. She arches a brow curiously at the questions, shrugging and shaking her head, "No, not really. With riders for parents, though, it's pretty easy to get just about anything you want, especially if you want to get scolded for something." Her flat expression indicates that comes from personal experience. She pauses with a tuber crisp halfway to her mouth as Kera mentions Moncerath and the other day, "Oh, yeah? Dang. Well. At least Keldan got to go. He's going to miss all his books, though…"
A little sympathetic grin is offered to Kyra over getting scolded by parents. Everyone's been there at some point in their brathood, but doesn't comment just yet. Another bite vanishes and she sets the burger down, grabbing a tubor crisp and dragging it through some sauce on her plate. Her other hand finally finds what it was looking for and slips out of her pocket, thready strands of white can be seen. "Oh, that's horrible. I went through that a bit myself, had no where to put my books and other study manuals. So many books, one little trunk." Shaking her head and giving an expression of mock horror, she cracks grin after a few seconds. "But getting back to what I was saying, if you'd like, we can go step out and have Moncerath observe you again,…" She flashes a quick week "…but without your toes all muddy.." she gives a shrug "…well let's just say, it's too cold round here still for you to be getting your feet all muddy over a dragon's whim." Kera winks with a easy going chuckle and extends her hand partially across the table. "But either way, I think her response will be the same as it is now. She thinks you should join your brother as a candidate for Kairo and Zeruth's clutch?"
Kyra looks vaguely surprised, but not terribly; there were a lot of hints being dropped, after all. She peers curiously at Kera, then towards the door, then back to the rider before she quirks a bit of a grin, "Sure, I'd like that. Keldan's lost without me, anyway, y'know?" There's a long pause before she notes, lifting a crisp as if to punctuate, "And my feet aren't /always/ muddy. They're usually pretty clean. Mostly. I mean, not when I have to not wear boots, which happens, but, uh… yeah." Squint. She stuffs that tuber in her mouth. There we go, problem solved.
Kera smiles across the table when Kyra agrees to candidacy, and gives over the white knot. "Well then welcome to Xanadu candidacy, Kyra." Amused by the bit of rambling about muddy feet, Kera lifts the cider mug to her table companion. "Don't worry about it, sometimes ya just have to come out of the boots or sandals, and sometimes mud happens, right?" Another amused wink before she goes a bit serious. "You said your parents are both riders yes? So wouldn't accept candidacy, just to keep an eye on your brother would you?"
Kyra takes the knot and ties it around her shoulder, digging something out of her pocket to use it so she can pin it on so it won't escape, "Thanks. Kel's going to be stoked." She blinks at the question about whether or not she'd accept candidacy just to keep an eye on her brother, though, and laughs, "Hey, he's my brother, I love him, but he can take care of himself. I wouldn't become a candidate just to keep him out of trouble." She shakes her head, turning her attention to the waitress as she returns with a cup for her. She'll take a solid swallow, then exhales happily and inquires, "Is there anything important I need to do before I get my stuff sorted?"
Kera seems satisfied with Kyra's reply and is already half-wrapping her burger with a clean bit of cloth so she can eat it on the go. "We need to get you moved to the barracks. Show you where the message board is. You'll need to check that frequently to see what duties you'll be assigned." Gathering up her things, and leaving the marks for her meal and a tip for the waitress, Kera pushes to her feet, taking a last long drink from her mug before taking her half eaten burger with her. "I'm not sure how many cots are still available, so you may not be able to pick and choose which one ya get."
