Xanadu Weyr - Candidates Barracks
A long, low ceilinged room opens off the entrance hall to the arena. One wall is slightly curved, set against the outer wall of the arena itself. Cots are set in two rows along the length of the room, each with its own small press at the foot for personal belongings. Wide windows are spaced along the outside wall, letting sunlight in, while other lights are available for the night time hours. It's always warm here when there are eggs on the sands, and candidates seldom need more than a light blanket.
The scent of suntan lotion crept it's way into the barracks last night, as well as a young woman with striking blue eyes and a mop of curly blonde hair that sprawls about her shoulders. Briari barely slept a wink last night. New bed. New Weyr. Too cold for her blood. She has the makings of one born and raised on a beach. Currently she is sitting on her cot, writing furiously in what appears to be a journal with a face mixed with both fear, anxiety, and joy.
Winter! It's winter, and it's snowing and it's lovely outside! Kaitro comes in, hair full of the white stuff as he makes his way inside from the cold that is winter. He's bundled up, however, used to the cold of Xanadu and carrying a rather huge shovel. He places it against the wall and brushes himself off, unwrapping the scarf that had been about his face and grinning widely. "Fear not! The evil foe has been pushed back! You may go out now, but keep a wary eye! The enemy is crafty and falls from the sky in peiodic clumps, it may take you by surprise!" This is followed by laughter as Kai moves to take off his damp clothes, depositing them onto the floor as he dresses in something warmer.
Blinking her eyes slowly at him, Briari tilts her head to one side, then makes another scribble in her book. Lobbing it backwards on to her cot, she rises upwards to her full height. "Eesh, I hate the snow. You.. uh.. are you a native to Xanadu?" Her voice asks curiously as she ambles over towards him, at least until he starts working his clothes off. Glancing off to the side in case he goes below layers, she rocks her shoulders slightly back and forth to pop a few joints and loosen herself up. "I am Briari, Journeyman Harper of Monaco Bay Weyr."
As the last of the cold wet clothing comes off, Kaitro moves over towards the storage unit in front of his bed, pulling out some clothes and changing into them. His head pops through the hole that is his shirt and the arms soon follow. Next are the pants that are wiggled over his hips and clasped into place. "Yup! I'm from here, born and raised. I'm a kitchen assistant, or was until S'ai and his bronze thought I'd be good for the sands. Whatever possessed them to think that, eludes me that's for sure!" He laughs cheerfully, turning around once he's fully dressed and offering out an enthusiastic hand. "Kaitro! Cook and defeater of evil vegitables!"
Reaching out to take his hand, Briari gives it a firm grasp, one that is built for power and authority. "Nice to meet you. S'ai searched you out, huh? He didn't say anything stupid during it, did he? You're the first guy he's ever searched." She says with absolute confidence as she gives a wide grin on her face. "But, I'm sure S'ai and Zeruth knows what they're doing. Ka'el, the Weyrleader came all the way out to my hot and sunny beach to search me. I'm still in a state of shock I think." Her grin rises even more, just as bright as any sun. "How do you live here? In all of this… cold.. wet… snow?"
Kaitro nods his head as he plops onto his cot, kicking off his boots as they clatter to the floor. He smiles as he drops his hand, returning just as vigorous of a shake as she. "Yeah? Well, far as I know, I'm his first ever since he and his clutchmates just graduated the other day." He laughs and shrugs his shoulders, "I dunno if I have complete trust in them, 'specially since C'rus doesn't like them very much right now. But it's a good enough search and I got a white knot out of it. And it's mine. And I'm going to stand this time instead of watch!" It's something he's rather enthusiastic about. He shrugs, "This is home, I've lived here all my life, I don't know anything else. It's not that bad, you get used to it, and it can be fun!"
"Oh yeah? Why does C'rus not like them?" Briari asks curiously enough once she lets go of his hand, then takes a seat on her cot with the grace of a cat, crossing one leg over the other and settling her hands upon her knee cap. "I've met him once, he seemed like an alright guy, but I'm curious to what issues he has with S'ai." Tilting her head ever so slightly, she pulls her journal over and opens it up again, going back to her sketch as her hand works along the page with her piece of graphite.
Kaitro shrugs his shoulders as he flops backwards, draping an arm over his eyes, "No idea but there's obvious tension between the two. I felt it around S'ai and I felt it around C'rus. I figure, it's not any of my business to put my nose where it isn't wanted. Let them settle it out themselves for all I care." He glances over as he starts to hear scribbling on paper, curiosity getting the better of him. "What'cha doing?"
"Just drawing, taking notes, you know, something to pass away the time." Briari says with a slight grin on her face. "So you don't know anything about why they are at odds but you're willing to trust C'rus over S'ai despite the fact that S'ai searched you?" She gives a faint tsk in her throat. "Interesting. Does that mean you're friends with C'rus?" Scibble. Scribble. Scribble.
"Well C'rus has been coming here long before S'ai won that flight with the gold. He and I became good buddies, so of course I trust him more over a bronzer. Plus he's keen on Kera, and I made them a meal the other night. That just proves he's an awesome guy." Or, at least that's Kaitro's reasoning, nodding his head along with his words. His eyes flicker towards the pad between her fingertips, rolling off his cot to try and sneek a peek. Peer!
"What does the color of one's dragon have to do with one's trust?" Briari asks casually as she blows a lock of blonde hair away from her face. "And if you don't know what the issue is between them, how can you write S'ai off so easily?" The hand of the Harper continues to move about the page, fleshing out what appears to be a dragon half buried under sand near a beautiful ocean and a cloudless sky. She has some color in there as well that she was adding in.
"Because I trust my instincts, and my instincts tell me that S'ai's a shady guy unless he proves me otherwise!" Kaitro says, wrapping his arms about his chest stubbornly. "And besides, I know C'rus is a good guy, so he can't do any wrong as far as I'm concerned." He peers at the drawing, watching her hands fly over the parchment until he's satisifed and moves to plop onto his cot again.
Smirking slightly to herself, Briari says, "Well, that's good to know. I'll make sure to keep an eye on this S'ai fellow. I guess if you don't trust him based upon your limited exposure to him, then I should trust your instincts as well." Flipping the page over, she scribbles something down, then flips back to the drawing. "Either way, it's nice to meet you Kaitro of Xanadu Weyr."
