Xanadu Weyr - Clearing
A wide clearing stretches from east to west, the ground packed hard although grass grows across most of it. Trees are strictly forbidden in this space, their danger to the constant draconic traffic reason enough to banish them to the forest that creates a border to the north. Where the ground is less trampled, tiny flowers poke their delicate heads out from their shaded hiding places with upturned petals to wave to whoever may be looking.
The cliff looms imposingly on two sides. Toward the southwest, a spire stretches up to high above where the everpresent watchdragon sits on a lonely peak with Xanadu's Starstones. A massive rocky spur extends to the north, curved slightly to hold the clearing and pocked with doors and windows.
The hatching arena and Dragonhealers' Annex sit to the southeast, built together into a single complex that takes up a large portion of the perimeter beneath its domed roof. To the southwest, wide steps lead up to the caverns, and almost directly south is the entrance to the Infirmary. Nestled between the infirmary and the main caverns there's a human-sized archway with frequent traffic - it leads to the Wanderin' Wherry Tavern.
Tucked near the arch, just off to one side is a tiny wood-frame shop bearing the name 'Wildflower Boutique'. Windows have been cut along the cliff in various places along the cliff. Those of the administrative offices are placed to have the best view of Xanadu's airspace - to the southwest, over the entrance to the caverns and the infirmary. Others mark the dormitories and those of lucky residents, while toward the northern edge of that spur cluster the windows and entrances to the crafters' complex.
The rest of the Weyr lies to the north and east - a broad road that leads through the meadow and the trees of the forest beyond. At the far northern edge of the clearing, just inside the perimeter kept clear of trees, a clocktower sits and proudly displays the hour.
With the golden queen in attendance over the eggs, Zeruth and S'ai have seen to it to sneak out for some well needed food, drink, and fresh air. With the first two taken care of in rapid fashion like their last meal had been days before, the Fortian pair is not lingering in the clearing. The bronze is stretched out not far from the arena in the event he's summoned, his rider resting against a foreleg. He's got a glass of water in his hand, watching the comings and goings of the riders and Weyr residents as they move about.
It's break time, at least for certain cooks. The youth makes his way out of the kitchesns to the clearings. Even with the nip in the air with the cold weather, the youth has dressed for warmth with how hot the kiitchens tend to get. Kai pauses, taking in the clearing until his eyes fall upon S'ai and his bronze, "Hello, bronzerider! You don't need anything do you? Should I go fetch you something more from the kitchens"
S'ai glances up from where he sits on the ground at the call from the young man. "Huh, me?" And there's a blink as he's drawn out of his apparent zone of zero brain activity. "Oh. Right. Uh, no no, I'm good. Actually busy digesting probably most of what was out already. Food comas, gotta love 'em." At his side, there's a snort from Zeruth that seems amused, at least given the green glow of his eyes. "Thanks for the offer though, uh, whoever you are. I'm S'ai! This is Zeruth. We're the… lucky culprits who caused this." He mumbles while jerking a thumb to the arena behind them.
Kaitro grins as he moves over towards the dragon and the rider, placing hands on his hips as he looks from one to the next, a impish grin pulling at his lips. "Ah, really. You sure you don't want any vegitables? Cause, y'know, we need to make sure that they don't come back next turn to take over the weyr!" He laughs cheerfully, shaking his head as he glances towards S'ai, offering his hand out to the bronzer. "Kaitro, you can call me Kai if it's easier to remember. Nice to meet you, S'ai and Zeruth, it's always nice to meet new people, especially if they are the ones who created the eggs in the first place. I heard C'rus talking about you.”
"Ohyah? You met Cy?" S'ai says with a lopsided grin as he pulls himself up onto his feet, setting the glass of water down next to him. "Oh geez, I don't think he was too happy with what happened but he's good people. Good to meetcha though, Kai." He says while taking the offered handshake. "So, besides warding off revolutions from gross side dishes, what do you do? Sounds like maybe kitchen work?"
Kaitro laughs quietly, nodding his head in agreement. "Indeed! He has a lady friend here that he's rather keen on, Kera, actually, she rides green Moncereth, if you didn't know."Kai wraps his arms about his chest, tilting his head to the side. "no, he didn't seem too thrilled that you won, to be frank. Dunno, why but it doesn't seem to be my business, I figure there's some bad blood between the two of you."The youth shrugs his shoulders indifferently as he laughs. "He's good people I've made friends with him and have seen him quite recently as of late, even made him and his lady friend food the other night to celebrate thier relationship, apparently Kera's turnday was the other day." he lifts his shoulders indifferently, "Actually, I do a little bit of everything! From shoveling snow to cleaning latrnes, I like helping out about the weyr as I can. I hate that no one likes to do anything around here so I help out as I can.”
S'ai gives a nod of his head at the revelation, "Yeup, I've met her once or twice. Sweet girl, I knew she lived here. There's some differing of opinions between him and I right now but that's not something you wanna get into. We'll settle it, m'not worried." At the list of duties, the rider gives a quiet laugh. "I was a weyrbrat so I know about doing a bit of everything. Nothing wrong with that, you get a lot of different experiences that way. Shame it don't sound like you get a lot of help but good on ya all the same. My parents loved saying hard work pays off. Can't say I believed it for a long time."
Kaitro laughs quietly in amusement as he leans lightly upon his right foot. "I figured there was a bad bit of blood because you won the flight the way he was acting, but I figure it's between you two. No need to put my nose where it isn't wanted!" He laughs, rolling his shoulders in a indifferent shrug. "Oh, you toop?Me as well, my mum and dad's a rider, don't see 'em too much but they're still family as far as I'm concerened. Family's family, doesn't matter how often you see 'em." The youth looks fairly amused rolling his shoulders, "Work's gotta get done whether or not you have help or not! I don't care none, I like helping out where I can. I figure it'll pay off in the end."
S'ai cracks a grin as parent talk crops up. "Junior and bronzer kid myself, both are in Telgar now. I see 'em when I can. Big guy here is the great-grandson of their dragons, funny enough. Not that he cares, dragons don't pay much attention to that stuff." And no, Zeruth doesn't seem to care as he just tips his head to regard the two with the look of a creature absently listening to what's being said. "Well, in any event you can enjoy those latrines - not my cup of tea. Dragon poop is even worse… weyrlinghood is nothing but poop and food and oil and more poop."
Kaitro laughs quietly, "it's not many people's cup of tea, lest of all mine, but it's gotta be done, and shards if never have to do it again. But it's not a bad job, not the worst there is. Rather be cooking myself, but someone's gotta do it. So it's gotta get done." Shoulders lift up absently in an indifferent shrug. "Really? Your dragon's the great-grandson of your parents? Now that's something to be proud of. My own mom and dad ride brown and green. Mom rides geen, dad rides brown, but Iwas raised by my foster parents, and they're more parents than my own.”
"Hey, family is family where ever you find 'em." S'ai says with an agreeing note and a lopsided grin that seems to come more naturally than a full one. "Foster parents are important, known enough of 'em in my time, glad to hear they support you. I take it you live here in Xanadu given you work here? First time I ever came here was on a tour with my parents, second was the flight. /Someone/ decided to detour." And there's a glance to Zeruth who just lifts his chin in a surprisingly human gesture of defensive innocence. "And don't be fooled, he knows how to manipulate people. …/hey/, you did not learn it from me!" He scoffs to his lifemate.
Kaitro laughs cheerfully as his gaze drifts from rider to dragon and then back again. Amusement flashing on the young cook's face. "Hey, I love my foster parents. They're great to me, I love all my brothers and sisters, Faranth knows I wouldn't give them up for the world! They've been there for me when my real parents haven't. But the way I look at it, I'm lucky, I have twice the parents, most people only have one pair. I have two!" He laughs quietly, shrugging his shoulders. "Hey, I'm certainly not one to judge people's dragons, Faranth ,nows that they are all rather silly if you ask me. They're a bunch of goofs, but they're all amusing and I enjoy all their company all the same.”
Not that comment does draw Zeruth's attention. There's a faint, almost subsonic rumble from the bronze as he swings his head closer, well close enough to sniff at the youth if he doesn't dodge. « I am not silly. » Comes the dragon's voice clear as day. It sounds almost identical to that of his rider save a faint metallic echo and the imagery of a city of lights in a landscape of eternal night and black steel and glass. "Zer, be nice. You like to have fun, admit it.”
"Hey! It's not bad being silly! Being silly is fun, otherwise, where would all the fun come from? Everything would be boring if there wasn't any fun all the time!" Kaitro laughs cheerfully at the bronze, pointedly sticking his tongue out at him. "You tell him, S'ai. It's boring if everything's serious all the time.”
S'ai reaches over a hand to place it against the scarred muzzle and teasingly push the bronze away. "See, he's got a point. You hate boring and you love games and a good challenge. You've just been Mr. Serious and Focused since those eggs were clutched." « It is my duty. » "Yeah yeah, Kairo leering doesn't at all factor into that I'm sure." There's a loud huff from the dragon as he eyes the pair, then Kaitro in specific, before he raises up his head with his nose raised defiantly. "…heh… you serious?" The Fortian eyes his dragon before looking to Kaitro. "Now you did it, kiddo. He said if you want things to be fun then he's challenging you to make it that way. ….wiiiiitth the other candidates."
Kaitro smirks slightly at the bronze, pointedly putting his hands upon his hips as if in a 'I told you so' fashion. The youth tilts his head slighty, confusion flickering upon his face as his gaze shifts from rider to dragon and back, seeming to catch only bits and pieces of a one-sided conversation. "other candidates? What do you mean the other candidates? I didn't see any tugged in recently…unless you mean me?"A hand places upon his chest, the gears falling into place. "you're…searching me? Now? I…guess? I mean, I could still help out while I'm a candidate, might have more time to do so, even!" That settled, he nods his head sagely, a wide grin settling upon his lips.
S'ai points a finger right at Kaitro, that grin widening as the situation seems to dawn on him. "Exactly. It's totally optional but the offer is there if you want it. You seem to have a good head on your shoulders. No worries about the work. Believe me, there's a ton. I know at Fort they had us help with all the basic duties so you may end up doing a lot of the same. Oh! Uh..shardit where'd those…ah!" He pulls open one side of his jacket, reaching in and fumbling to free and then withdraw a white candidate's knot, offering it over. "Your call, Kai.”
Kaitro blinks as the hand points straight at him, causing the youth to look back and forth making sure that the rider is, in fact, talking to him and no one else. Another blink as his head turns slowly back to S'ai and the offered white knot now in his hands. Fingers slowly stretch out to seize the knot, taking it within his grip and holding it tightly against his chest in case the bronzer decides to steal it from him. "Of course I'll stand. I mean, what else am I gonna do during search except all the things the candidates normally do. Except I get to stand!" And a grin settles upon his chest, clutching the knot protectively.
"Hah!" S'ai barks out, "That's the spirit! Besides, it ain't /that/ scary.. unless the dragonets start running for ya. And your weyrlingmaster is a guy like M'icha, but hey, you'll figure it out. We all do. Head on over to the barracks and call dibs on your cot. I'll let them know you're coming so they can get your duties settled for you." He beams with unmistakable excitement, nearly as much as if he'd been searched himself. "Congratulations, Candidate Kaitro. I'm sure you'll do your foster parents proud."
Kaitro nods his head as he settles the new knot over his shoulder, pocketing his old one with a wide grin, "Thanks S'ai, Zumeth, thank you for searching me. I can't wait to tell my parents!" And the youth toddles off to do just that, whee, excitement!
