Weyrsecond D'had

D'son taps D'had for Weyrsecond in a little lull in the storm rescue activity. No time like the present, right?

Xanadu Weyr - Weyrleaders' Office

Office and retreat, this is the domain of Xanadu's Weyrleaders. The door is in the eastern wall, quite close to the southern end while the northern wall is dominated by big, expansive windows, framed by sumptuous deep blue drapes edged with a brilliant gold braid and tied back with a thick rope of braided gold and blue cord. In between, the eastern wall is covered floor to ceiling with shelves that house all sorts of records, manuals and supplies that are used on a day-to-day basis. The southern wall has the Weyrleader's desk — plain fellis wood, well polished and masculine. From behind his desk, the Weyrleader can look straight through the windows and out onto the main airspace of Xanadu. The western wall is where the Weyrwoman's desk resides: a lovely piece of furniture made of warm cherry wood. From her seat, a glance sideways gives her an equally good prospect out the window. There are a few other seats, some comfortably arranged around a low round table for small, informal meetings while there also some that can be drawn up to one of the desks.

On the south side of the door, the space is occupied by a low oblong table where refreshments can be set without someone needing to intrude. There is also an 'incoming' tray where incoming correspondence or similar items can be left.

It's been a really long, really busy day and D'son sits in his chair, staring up at the ceiling with reports laid out on his desk and a lot of interesting read-outs on his computer screen. Storms. Tornadoes. People to rescue. Busy day for Xanadu.

What day at Xanadu isn't busy? Rhetorical question there really. But as the day winds to and end there's a rap at the door of the Weyrleader's office before D'had lets himself in. He gave warning, however short it was, and if he's not supposed to be there he'll be gone soon enough anyway.

D'son's chin drops enough that he can see who just came through the door. Tired as he is, D'son offers the S&R wingleader a smile. "Hey D'had. Hanging in there? How's it looking out there?"

D'had lifts a shoulder in a half shrug. Since he hasn't been shooed out yet he helps himself to one of the chairs on the visitor side of the desk, slumping into it as he replies. "Yeah," comes in response to the first of the questions, while the second gets first a glance back towards the hall before his dark eyes settle back on the Weyrleader. "Been better, been worse. Hopefully things will clear up sooner rather than later."

"Good. Figure your wing's been really damn busy today," D'son says with a wry grin. "After everything is all cleaned up and everyone's safe, take some extra rest days for your wingriders, okay?" The weyrleader pushes his chair back a little and gets to his feet, stretches and paces over towards where klah is kept warm. "Drink?" he offers and then a little more quietly: "And have you thought that offer over more?"

"Please," D'had replies about the drink, leaning back in the chair and taking a moment to stretch his legs. "More than busy enough, I'm sure they'll appreciate the time off." he adds before falling in to his rather usual semi-silence when the last question. Pause. "Well.. If you want me."

Two mugs are poured out and D'son turns back towards his guest. "Sweetener? A little milk?" he offers next and nods about the wing. "Yeah, usually do after a crisis." Deep breath hand hazel eyes lift to D'had's face. "Yeah. I do."

"Not today." D'had needs the full strength of that klah right about now. When the mug is handed over fingers curl about it, a nod of thanks going to the younger man. A deep breath is taken of the steam. "Then you have an answer."

D'son passes off the mug, curls his own towards himself and waits expectantly then nods. "Thank you, D'had. I appreciate it. When I was locked up at Ista, it kind of — well it brought it home. The Weyr needs a backup for me. Can't really leave Niva high and dry like that again." Serious that as he puts his mug down then walks around his desk to pull open a drawer and pulls out a shiny new Weyrsecond's knot. "You'll still have the S&R wing to manage of course, this is just extra duties on top of that. Coming to meetings with me, working with the other wingleaders, dealing with Niva." Oh fun, says his look for that as he approaches the bluerider with the knot on his palm.

D'had takes a deep drink of klah while D'son settles himself and produces the knot. "Hopefully we won't have any problems as such in the future," he notes of the Weyrleader's Istan arrest. "Think I can handle a few meetings." Niva he'll leave out of discussion. Its safer that way. "And .. thanks .. for thinking of me." The thought to say thanks, coming as he reaches for the new knot. "Best be getting back to the wing with the weather though…"

"Want me to pin it on?" D'son says a little awkwardly, this being the first time he's hand out such a big promotion. "And I hope we won't have similar problems either, but it's good to have the backup." He looks down at the knot, brushes its edge lightly with his thumb before passing it over as D'had takes it. "Sure. You're capable for all the things that get murmured about you. And I know you'd have mine and Niva's back," Dels says sincerely, nods in the wake of those words. "Of course. Take that downtime though after things are dealt with. I'll be back out in a bit, just needed to … breathe." Wryness in his tone. "We'll brief you up day after tomorrow."

D'had chuckles, "Think I can handle it." The pinning of the knot that is. There's another long draw from the mug in hand after he stands, then it's left sit on the corner of the desk. D'son can decide where he wants that. "I'll try, you remember to take some time too." he reminds before heading for the door, readjusting his jacket on the way.

"I will, after everything has calmed down," D'son affirms and walks D'had out. "Thank you, for saying yes," is offered over as sincerely, as the weyrleader hangs back in the doorway after his new 'second walks through it.
