The Trouble With Sisters

Xanadu Weyr - Clearing

A wide clearing stretches from east to west, the ground packed hard although grass grows across most of it. Trees are strictly forbidden in this space, their danger to the constant draconic traffic reason enough to banish them to the forest that creates a this and sharp border to the north. Where the ground is less trampled, tiny flowers poke their delicate heads out from their shaded hiding places with upturned petals to wave to whoever may be looking.

The cliff looms imposingly on three sides, stretching upwards all the way up the side of the mountain where, high above, Xanadu's Star Stones and the ever present watchdragon sit on a lonely peak. Directly south is a massive tunnel, fully wide enough for even the largest dragon to fly down. Southeast are wide steps leading up to the Caverns and eastwards is the large entrance to the Infirmary. Somewhat north of the Infirmary is a human sized archway that has a frequent quantity of traffic — it leads to the Tavern. Southwest lies the low ledges currently belonging to Xanadu's queens while north and west a broad path cut by the side of the cliff leads to the Feeding Grounds and due north is the spacious trail that leads to the rest of the Weyr.

It's just a couple hours after noon, and the miner's apprentice Janelle doesn't look like she's stopped yet. There's some creases of dirt on both pants and skin, though somehow her shirt seems to be free of the blackened irritations. She's headed out from the caverns, somewhere into the bowl, muttering at herself as she stomps into the damp, spring air.

With spring on its way at Xanadu, the weather is warming but still chilly and damp, and the preparations for Founder's Day are in full swing, meaning that [] is spending more and more time at Xanadu, preparing for the fun that is to come. He's crossing the clearing from the direction of the meadow, pausing as Janelle goes stomping by. Turning after her for a moment, he considers, and then moves to fall in step with her.

Janelle stops up short as she finds herself with a shaddow. Shooting a Look towards the one joining her, she quizes abruptly, "You don' tknow my older sister Joleine, do you?" Because if you do, Jan might not want to talk to you right at the moment.

Maddox stops in his tracks as she does, shoving his hands in his back pockets, blinking at her, shaking his head. "Joleine? Doesn't sound familiar. But, they've kept me too busy working when I'm here to meet too many girls." He says with a grin, winking at her.

"Good." is Janelle's abrupt response. "You aren't from around here, though, are you?" too many people.. Too many people, when you train to live your working life in a dark cave.

Maddox shakes his head hurriedly, giving her a bow with a flourish of his hand. "Harper Journeyman Maddox. Formally posted to Western Weyr." He says before he's straightening up and smiling. But then, he's pausing, tilting his head. "What did this.. Joleine do, though? A harper's talents should never be wasted.."

Janelle scoffs, "She's my -sister-!" with exasperation, and she grumbles a thing or two below her breath again. Then, she stands herself tall, brushing her pants as if to brush thoughts of her older sibling away, and tilts her head just slightly to the right. "Well met, Journeyman. I'm Janelle, Apprentice for the Minecraft."

"But, she had to have done *something* right? I mean, my sister is annoying but, usually she's done something first." Maddox says - perhaps a bit too cheerfully, all things considered - moving to step to the right as she tilts her head. "Did she spill something on you?"

Janelle sighs briefly, closing her eyes, and pressing her fingers to her temple. "No. she's being -her-. Thinks because she's older, and 'knows better', that I should have myself a man. She's just going too far."

Maddox grimaces a little at that sigh from Janelle, that hand on her temple. A half step back and Maddox looks nervously at the cavern, then back at the miner with a tilt of his head. "You should have just told her you did. Works for my parents."

Janelle grins a bit, dropping her hand to her side, "You lie. To your parents? Wait- no, your a Harper, you spun a tale. Harpers don't lie, do they?"

Maddox smirks a little bit, inclining his head to the side. "To simply say that there's already one doesn't really count as lying.. I mean.. I have friends.. who are girls." He shrugs a bit, grinning at her words. "Harpers never lie, aye!" He says with a grin and a flourish of his hand.

Janelle Grins a bit, andnods. "Well, you look about her age, but I'm young enough not to need one, I swear. and it just really cracks my rocks when she thinks she knows better than me, whatI want or need!"

"You never -need- one." He says with a snort, shaking his head a little bit, and then at her indignation, he's actually chuckling softly, shaking his head. "I hope that she at least has one of her own, if she's trying to set you up?"

Janelle rolls her eyes now, with a nod. "Yes. Been with him for Faranth knows how long now.. She's bet and bound that he's going to ask her to share the rest of his life, and how it's the most wonderful feeling int he world, blah blah blah.. Just gimme the tratitude of someone who's just been freed from where they were trapped, and I'm happy."

His soft chuckles turn louder, gaining strength as she continues to talk about this older sister of hers, and the love of her life, Maddox actually smacking his leg once as he listens. "Shards, Janelle. She might as well leave you alone. Sounds like she's got enough of that for both of you." He offers quickly, before he sobers a bit at the mention of rescuing people. "Different things for different sorts."

Janelle nods a bit, with a grin, "So you can see my point, that she can keep it to herself, then." A single, decisive nod is added to denote the significance of her statement. At least, it's significant to her. "And yea, I'm training for SEarch and rescue."

"My sister's already got two brats of her own. Seems fit to think that the rest of us should have started as early as she did." He rolls his eyes, but then, as she changes topics, he perks a little more, shifting closer now that the apparent dangerous of miner-anger has passed. "Are you one of those wherhandlers, then?"

Janelle shakes her head, "No.. Just a simple apprentice. Been learning it a while, though, so I've been about and sent to some of the more simple rescues." And you wouldn't expect a kid to get lost, where she's not on the search team. "Maybe some day, though.

"Well, maybe you'll have some luck, then. I hear there's a clutch of wher eggs, but I don't have any idea how that stuff works for you guys." He says with a shrug, and then glances over Janelle briefly. "You've gotta be.. eighteen, nineteen? If its been a few years, you might get to do more, if you're almost to Journeyman.."

Janelle shrugs just briefly, "If it happens, it does.. If not, there's always work for someone like me, around a Weyr, Hall or mine. I'll find things to keep me busy."

"Work never does stop, Harper or Miner." Maddox agrees with a nod of his head, and a chuckle. "Too much to do, not enough time in the day to do it, usually." A pause, and he glances at her again. "I'm not going to get you in trouble, am I?"

Janelle shake sher head a bit, and grins, "Naah. It's not like we're in an emergency situation or something, right? I'm just supposed to be practicing some stuff.. But, public safety and relations are important, too. so I"ll do this: Stay away from open mines, unless accompanied by someoen that works that mine. do NOT enter amine, or unexplored cavern alone. Ever."

"Good. I know those Masters can be angry, if they think you're supposed to be doing something, and you're not." Maddox grimaces a little, and grins at her public safety spiel. "So, I guess I shouldn't say that I was thinking of going to see what the mine was all about then, hm?"

Janelle grins a bit, "You just need to be accompanied. And I"d be glad to offer you any assistance I can, in the interest of inter-craft relations."

"Its always good for a Harper to get to know the other crafts, you never know when it will come in useful.." He says with a grin, and a bow. "Maybe, if no one minds, I'll beg a tour off of you, after all these celebration preparations are over."

Janelle nods a little, and bows in return. "I will, of course, be of utmost assistance. Bet you're horribly busy right now, with all these preparations and stuff."

"I'll be perfectly happy when its all over. Though, hopefully I'll have a pretty pocketful before we finish too. Been saving up all sorts of instruments too." He preens a little bit. "How about I'll trade you a pint for a tour. You miners like ale, don't you?"

Janelle nods a bit, though only once, "Aye, I'll drink the stuff. Anything that's cold and wet is good, after you've gotten covered head to toe in the mines, after all. It's a deal, then. After all this stuff's done with, and you can spare the time, we'll tour then catch a pint."

"Deal. Nice meeting you, Apprentice Janelle." Maddox says with a grin on his face that is entirely too big, all things considered, and then he glances at the caverns. "What did you say your sister's name was? Joline?" He ponders it slowly.

Janelle nods a bit, "Joleine, right. And It's been a pleasure meeting you as well, Journeyman Maddox. Hope that Xanadu keeps you well, and you don't go nuts with all the preparations!"

"I'll have to see what I can do for you then." He says with a grin and a wink, nodding his head to her, and offering another bow. "Thank you, Janelle.." He smirks, and then is hurrying off the way Janelle came to try and find this troublesome sister.

Janelle nods once more, and grins, watching as the Harper makes his way off, perhaps even offering a wave to his back as he goes.
