Planning a Celebration

Xanadu Weyr - Weyrleaders' Office

Office and retreat, this is the domain of Xanadu's Weyrleaders. The door is in the eastern wall, quite close to the southern end while the northern wall is dominated by big, expansive windows, framed by sumptuous deep blue drapes edged with a brilliant gold braid and tied back with a thick rope of braided gold and blue cord. In between, the eastern wall is covered floor to ceiling with shelves that house all sorts of records, manuals and supplies that are used on a day-to-day basis. The southern wall has the Weyrleader's desk — plain fellis wood, well polished and masculine. From behind his desk, the Weyrleader can look straight through the windows and out onto the main airspace of Xanadu. The western wall is where the Weyrwoman's desk resides: a lovely piece of furniture made of warm cherry wood. From her seat, a glance sideways gives her an equally good prospect out the window. There are a few other seats, some comfortably arranged around a low round table for small, informal meetings while there also some that can be drawn up to one of the desks.

On the south side of the door, the space is occupied by a low oblong table where refreshments can be set without someone needing to intrude. There is also an 'incoming' tray where incoming correspondence or similar items can be left.

The sun has been up for perhaps an hour or so, the morning mists burned off of the grounds at Xanadu. Yet, from the state of the office, it can be assumed that Niva has been awake longer than the sun, with boxes on her desk and on the central table, the lids off, as she is going through them, searching, the door open.

Even with the door open, she knocks, on the frame, sticking her head inside. Bright eyed and bushy tailed, as they say, the early hour is no stranger to Taerah and she smiles a little as she steps inside, "Good morning, Weyrwoman, I was hoping to catch you..if you have a few moments?"

The knock on the door makes Niva jump, the Weyrwoman blinking a few times at Taerah before she's finally able to wipe the startled expression from her face. "Miss Taerah.." She replies formally, though it takes her a moment to attach a name, shaking her head a little. "Of course.." And Niva straightens from the box, looking around, and tugging Vivian's chair out from the smaller desk in the room.

Taerah winces inwardly at having startled Niva but she nods her head, "Yes ma'am, hello," she says and walks into the office completely, slipping down into the offered chair. "I wanted to follow up on my letter.. I have been out of pocket for a few days and thought I'd check in with you.. to see if any decisions had been made and if so, how I might be of assistance?"

"Letter.." Niva says with a moment of hesitation, brow furrowing as she turns to look at her desk, at the boxes, and then back at the archivist. "Oh!" She says after a moment, actually finding a file after only a moment, waving it a bit. "This letter.." She says, still a little distracted as she nods. "I.. I feel you're not the only one, interested in a.. records room as it were." She says with a sigh, patting one of the boxes. "The.. new Weyrleader would be one that would agree with you on it." And likely the rest of the administrative team as well.

Taerah waits, smiling, then tilts her head, 'Yes that one.. well it would make things perhaps a bit easier for your assistant.." then she pauses and looks to the smaller desk. Her eyes drift back to Niva and she smiles, "They could be set up in such a way that it would be easier for all to make use of them.. perhaps not quite so daunting.. though I was quite excited to see the milestone that the Weyr is about to reach."

Niva glances at the desk, shaking her head a little bit, before looking back at Taerah. "Make it easier for all of us, I suppose, if they were organized rather than… this." She waves her hands at the boxes, each one bearing no labels or identifiers. And then, thankful for the change in subject, Niva's perking up again at the mention of the milestone. "I was surprised, I knew it'd be, perhaps in the next few turns, but not so close."

Taerah smiles and nods her head, "It would.." and she looks to the desk, her OCD making her want grab all the papers and sort them, she resists. Good girl. "Such a busy time, with the new weyrleader and all.. and now this.. I suspect you wish to have some sort of celebration, I hope to be here for it."

Niva turns to look at Taerah, hand on her hip, opening her mouth to ask something. But quickly she's shutting it without a word, and shaking her head. Instead, her hand drops to the side, and she glancines at Taerah with a smile. "If you would, I think a celebration would do us all good. I would like to install a plaque, to our founders, if you would find the names and date? Perhaps anything else of use, too.."

Taerah notes Niva's expression and she quiets then she smiles in return and nods her head, "I can do that.. I believe the oldest living Weyrwoman is now.. perhaps in her nineties.." she muses. "You know.. a Founder's Day Festival would be rather grand.." she says, tapping her chin, wheels turning. "There should be a founding document.. the original by-laws..and I know I saw the signatures.. which really should be preserved, a computer can hold information, it can't preserve history.." and she smiles softly. "Perhaps remind us all from whence we came.."

"If you need help with interviews, I assure you, my daughter Vivian has more than enough time to do so." Niva says, volunteering the teenager and Weyrleader's assistant without hesitation. Leaning against a free spot on the desk, the Weyrowman nods slowly at her suggestions, fingers tapping against the wooden drawers. "Perhaps a smith would be able to etch them in the plaque, for us.." She contemplates, nodding to Taerah as she thinks.

Taerah smiles and nods her head, "Vivian, alright I'll remember that.." and she nods her head. "I'm sure they could do that..did you have any other thoughts for it? I would be more than happy to help.. I'll bet Xanadu would be overrun with activity.. a feast.. perhaps display some old artifacts.. ooh…" and she stops, blushing a little. "Pardon my enthusiasm.. it's history in the making.. and history made."

"Don't be put off by her… attitude, and if she has any complaints, she can bring them to me." Niva replies slowly, and then pauses, to think, fingers rapping against the drawer again. "Perhaps the wingleaders will have suggestions. Food of course.." She continues to ponder, before glancing at Taerah, a smile slowly spreading on her face. "There's no apologizing for enthusiasm."

Taerah smiles and nods her head, "Yes ma'am," she says of the instructions for the attitudinal daughter then she lifts a brow and grins, "They should use the old recipes.. for at least a few dishes.." she says delightedly then her eyes dance with ideas. "You know..oh my.. a parade of colors.. then.. they could.." and she waves her hand around, "Separate and form their wings in the air.." Pause. Blink. "I wonder.. and I have no idea who'd win the honor but.. if the weavers could make long strands.. three dragons.. weaving them in the air to form the weyr's knot.." she bites at her lower lip.

"Find the recipes, and I'll have the kitchens prepare them." Niva says with a nod of her head, pushing off the desk to stand up a little. "We certainly will make it an occasion to remember. Please, any ideas you have.. if you note them for myself and.. the Weyrleader," Niva winces a little at the reminder of the 'leader's age, "We'll certainly put them to work."

Taerah sits up straighter, "Games.. founder's day games.." and she stands, pacing, thinking, "You could have charms made.. even invite a few crafters to set up shop.. I mean the possibilities are endless." She stops mid-thought and then wrinkles her nose, "Listen to me ramble.. I shall write it all out so you may choose whatever you wish.. any help I can give I will certainly be happy to do so.. I..can draw out the records room plan if you like as well.." Taerah adds, "You know if you do the knot thing… in the air.. the ribbons could then be cut and secured with a charm as momentos..so that the fabric isn't necessarily wasted.." then she really does hush, pressing her lips together.

Niva contemplates Taerah's ideas, slowly pacing, before turning to look at Taerah with a grin. "One might think you're wasted as an archivist." Niva comments with a shake of her head, waving off her apology with a laugh a long time in coming. "Enk.. Enkavir, I think his name is, I'm certain he and Vivian would have ideas for the room, if you want to discuss it with them."

Taerah grins some then blushes, "Well thank you, ma'am, it's very exciting.. an exciting time here.. I think perhaps I will plant the bug in their ears and then leave it to them as your residents.." she notes then clasps her hands. "I shall perhaps focus on this celebration.. I will forward an outline to you within the sevenday..then you may count me in on the work if you wish, I remain Xanadu's servant as long as I am needed."

"We have much to look forward to - eggs on the Sands, Weyrlings working towards Graduation, and a day to celebrate our founding.." Niva agrees with a smile, nodding, and offering a hand to Taerah. "Xanadu, and I, appreciate all you've done." A pause, and Niva glances at the boxes, and then back at Taerah, tilting her head. "And, perhaps, if in your searching you come across a number of folders regarding a man named Kefai, would you bring them here immediately? They're recent, and.. they seem to have been misplaced."

Taerah nods and then slips her hand into Niva's shaking it. "Kefai.." she says, brows wrinkling. "Indeed.. all the information I've logged has a reference number in the computer system that tells me which box the paper files are in.." and she nods, "I can do a search or ten," she grins. "I will leave you to your work then, Weyrwoman, unless there anything else you need?"

"Aye. They should be here… Or with the Juniors things, and I can find it neither. Any of it." And from the emphasis, it seems as if there is quite a large amount of missing information. A smile, a firm shake, and Niva is stepping back to escort Taerah towards the door. "Not at all. Thank you for your help, and I look forward to your ideas." And that she'll be able to find those files.

Taerah nods then hrms, "I see.. I will make it a point to locate them then.." Hound on the trail! She walks to the door and turns, "I'll send my report soon and hopefully..those missing files.." and she smiles then makes her way out.

"Good luck.." Niva calls after Taerah, watching the young woman go, before she's turning to peer at one box, and then the others, digging back in, hoping to have some luck of her own.
