Xanadu Weyr - Craft Complex
This large area has been painted a soft cream with dark orange trim used as an accent. It's separated into a variety of smaller sitting areas, couches and chairs organized into rings and squares, tables set where they can be used easily. Recessed electric lights in the ceiling provide a warm glow, and a row of angled skylights on the eastern wall above the entrance give some natural light when bleary crafters first emerge. There's often a cart with klah parked off to one side to help with waking up or finishing that important project - or simply to be enjoyed with comfortable seating and good company.
Along the southern edge, an open archway leads to a library of books and records. There's something for every craft, it seems, from tomes of caprine diseases, to Pernese history and law, to gemstone identification, to sheet music, to sea charts and herbal manuals. There's even a few works of fiction, though none of it seems very well organized. Whatever is sought, it's probably here… somewhere. A few desks for studying are tucked in amongst the shelves, each with a lamp to illuminate the reading material. Near that archway, a long table holds a row of computers. They're connected to databases all over Pern, and are available for general use except when the computercraft requires them.
To the north, a pair of double doors open onto a grand hall, the vaulted ceiling designed with acoustics in mind. This space is used for lectures and concerts, rows of benches set up to face the front. Along one wall, instruments hang free or on shelves for anyone with the appropriate skills to use. There are often harpers here, practicing their craft.
A pair of hallways lead back from the western wall, one going to the apprentice dorms and the the private quarters for the ranking crafters posted at the weyr. The other provides access to the various workshops.
It's around the middle of the afternoon, after most people have disappeared into whatever tasks tend to occupy their days. Today, for Soriana, that's apparently… looking through the shelves of the library here in the craft caverns. "Hmm…" she says to herself, as fingers trace over the cover of one before moving to the next to give it consideration in turn.
Surrounded by an organized chaos of books, and parts, Brynnjan is a sight. A mass of parts is held in one hand, while he consults half-a-dozen books with guidance from the other. Tweak this bit—ACK! That's not supposed to do that. … Wait, it can do that, but only if.. ah, yes. Tighten that bit there. Good. But then this bit here becomes crimped… blast! Bryn frowns at himself, and pinches the bridge of his nose. He goes back to consulting the schematics.
"Maybe…" Soriana muses. She even gets as far as taking down the book and glancing inside before she shakes her head and puts it back on the shelf. A sigh, and then she turns to look for… fresh inspiration, maybe? Instead, she finds Brynnjan, and she tilts her head with a curious expression before drifting closer to observe just what it is he's up to besides making a technological nest of wires and metal bits. Though… hmm. That schematic catches her eye. It's kind of familiar…ish…
Suddenly, Bryn blinks at himself, and fiddles purposefully with the mass of wiring and parts, his face screwing up in concentration. Increase the tension here, twist this, solder that. He holds up a heating coil, or at least what one might think to be a heating coil. "This should fix things."
Soriana steps a bit closer, looking at that… yeah, coily thing. Like in the picture, more or less. "Is that for the southwest corner?" she asks as a greeting instead of any of the more conventional ones.
"I overheard talk of a heating coil being fussy in the hatching sands, so I figured I could build a new one. Solve the issue, and present proof of my skill." Bryn responds, trying not to sound cocky, but.. proud of an accomplishment. "I'm sure it'll work."
"Mmhmm," Soriana says with a nod. "That'd be the southwest corner. There's a cool patch that comes and goes." She leans in, taking a closer look at the coil in question. "Have you run it through tests yet? What'll it do if it gets a spike in the current? The wiring down there isn't the best, especially when we're having to use the generators."
"I've only just finished constructing it. I'd like to test it out, of course. If you know of a place where I can run some tests, please, lead on." Brynnjan packs the gadget away, cleans up his area, and stands.
"Well, that depends how confident you are." Soriana grins. "If it's not likely to spark all over and set things on fire, then… yes, in fact, I do." She helps catch a bit of wire that's trying to fall over, setting it back on the table to be cleaned. "The side incubator in the infirmary's not schedule to be in use soon, and it's on its own circuit." So there's a limit of just how much it can do!
Brynnjan beams. "I think that would be a perfect testbed for this invention." Brynnjan nods, smiling. "Assuming everything goes according to plan, with whom would I need to speak regarding installation? I'd like to do everything by the book."
"For the testing?" Soriana's grin widens. "Me. I'm Soriana, grade four dragonhealer here." She extends a hand to complete the introduction. "For the real thing… well, that's me again for a start, but you'll also need it reviewed by the Senior Weyrwoman and Weyrleader. Oh, and depending on how long it takes, you may need to coordinate with Bethari. Depends on how Risabeth's doing by then… anyhow. The testing part is simple, at least!"
Brynnjan smiles, and offers a hand. "A pleasure to meet you, Soriana. I'm Brynnjan, a Techcrafter. My specialty is Engineercraft." Naturally. "Shall we see if my knowledge and skill is as good as I'm hoping it is?" He grins.
"Likewise," Soriana says as she gives that hand a shake. "Always glad to have more people around who keep things working as they should. Or maybe find new ways to have them work." She grins, then nods. "As we're both hoping, really!" She gives the table a glance to make sure everything's nicely cleared. "This way…" Out! Into the perilous outdoors, or at least the clearing.
