Xanadu Weyr is set in a lovely valley on the western shore the Caspian Sea. The original Xanadu Stakehold was located here, although little of the modern Xanadu bears any resemblance to what the first settlers inhabited. The Caspian Lake links the Black Rock River to the main Sea of Azov and as such, it is a saltwater lake, not freshwater.
In regards to wider Pern, it is located on the Southern Continent about half way between the site of Southern Weyr and the Landing plateau. It is about as much further south as it is west or east of these reference points.
Specifically, the Weyr is built into a group of mountains on the southern side of the valley through which the Rubicon River flows. The northern side of the valley is also bounded by a mountain although it is uninhabited — Xanadu has no lack of space for it's inhabitants.
The climate of the area is on the border between temperate and sub-tropical: it remains a comfortable temperature throughout most of the turn and is nearly ideal for farming. A little snow falls in winter but never enough to be a problem while summer often has long, hot and lazy days, without the humidity of a tropical Weyrs such as Ista.
There are a number of relatively minor holds scattered around the area. They look to Xanadu Weyr for services but as they do not tithe, are not weyrbound to Xanadu. Rather, they trade with the Weyr and this arrangement satisfies everyone.
