Ujinath
zeneamburosmall.png

This small blue dragon is lithe and limber. Thin of frame, there is no extra girth added to him, his limbs are fit with adequate musculature without being overdone. A long whip-like tail protrudes from strong hips and moves with ease to adjust his weight as needed. Broad wings fold neatly at his back. Cerulean blue washes over the hide of this dragon. Flecks of white give his flesh some texture, but are so small that they are indistinguishable even from a few paces. The ridges on his back fade into a deeper blue that runs down his spine and over the edges of his wings, creating an outline of his skeletal structure when viewed from above. A slender head ends abruptly in a squarish and angular snout. Deep set eyes whirl behind large ridges, making them look larger than they are and somewhat cat-like. Splayed paws have toes arranged in a V-shape, with feet a bit larger than the average dragon in terms of his size. Razor sharp claws of boney white sit on his feet, a dangerous foam sitting at the edge of the sea of blue. Curved and white, they look like polished marble in the sun.

Egg Name and Description

One Spectacular Spectacular Egg
This egg is covered in an explosion of color set against a dark backdrop. Reds, yellows, greens, blues and purples flecked with iridescence bloom forth like dancing flowers. These careless brush strokes blooming out from a bright center into circular poofs spotting the entire bottom half of the ovoid. Amidst the array of flowers are linear strokes of black and white and grey, giving the eyes a rest between the sections of bright color. Overhead are smaller flecks of glowing color which seem to rain down on the busy pattern below. A metallic grid pattern is barely discernible from the dark backdrop, but provides a sense of structure to the top of the egg and boxes in the flecks above. In one area against this busy colored backdrop is a spot of pure white, glowing outwards with four large tapering rays and surrounded by hundreds of tiny flecks of the same pure white. A crystal clear sun in the sky of color on black, it outshines even the dazzling array of color located below it, and radiates with a sheen that seems to refract light.

Hatching Message

One Spectacular Spectacular Egg lurches forward from its position in the sand, ending up in what appears to be a face plant. The white spot on the egg now pointing upwards instead of on the side of the egg.

A white claws suddenly emerges from the white spot in the One Spectacular Spectacular Egg. Then another. Then another. Soon the hole in the egg is big enough, and the dragonet hidden inside tumbles to freedom!

Impression Message

The heat of the sands. The roar of the crowd. The dryness of your throat. All the sudden it fades away, replaced by a serene feeling. Suddenly you feel your thoughts awash in a powder blue, and a smooth tenor enters your head. « Oh! Kiena! There you are. I thought I'd lost you. There are so many people here! » The color shifts from blue to a pleasant pastel yellow them, as the voice continues. « But none of that matters now, we've got each other. I'm Ujinath. We'll be able to run and jump and laugh and fly together. But first, I'm feeling a bit hungry, aren't you? »

Personality

“My spirit. This is a new thought. I'm not sure exactly what it means, but it suggests I'm a fighter. In a sort of brave way. It's not as if I'm never friendly. Okay, maybe I don't go around loving everybody I meet, maybe my smiles are hard to come by, but I do care for some people.” — Katniss Everdeen; Hunger Games

Deep down and secreted away, Ujinath is good natured at his core but rarely ever shows it, save for the one bound to his heart, his soul and ‘spirit’ and that would be Kiena and Kiena alone. Only she will ever see him as he should — and could — be. From a young age will he come off as brusque and insensitive to all others around him, no matter if they are strangers or friends or even his own clutch siblings and kin. All he holds to a distance and rare few does he permit to broach the lines of friendship and even then it’s a tentative thing and easily broken (usually by Ujinath and not the other). It is not that he is not friendly and does not care; for he is and he does, but the complexities of social interaction baffle him. « Why must I pretend to love or show happiness when I feel neither towards them, Kiena? You do not act sweetly to all who greet you. You do not trust all the words they speak either. »

Ujinath knows that he’s going about it the wrong way, but he feeds on the cues Kiena gives him and her deep rooted habits of instantly distrusting most strangers has seemed to rub off and taken just as deep a hold in the young blue’s mind. So will his distrust begin, a rather unusual trait for one his age and at such a crucial time in his growth. Just as Kiena cannot trust, neither can Ujinath and it will take change in her heart to begin to change him. Awkward as it is, she will have to overcome that hurdle or face far harsher and difficult trials to come down the road.

Attempting to confront him with the issue directly will only have him bristling and indignant, hotly exclaiming: « There is nothing wrong with me! So what if I do not trust Cvilidreth? Do you? … No? I didn’t think so. » In this respect they will butt heads as both vie for dominance and understanding. Never to the point though that the bond is threatened and if Kiena holds her ground long enough and with sound reasoning not ruled by her impulsiveness and temper, Ujinath will relent. « You are my heart and I trust you. If you are determined that this is right then… it must be. » Likewise, he will offer Kiena the same consistent foundation to lean on in times of indecision and trouble.

…She states herself that nice people are the most dangerous because they get inside of her and that they could hurt her badly when she least expected it. She has shown she will protect those she loves, no matter the cost to herself… — Suzanne Collins on Katniss Everdeen; Hunger Games

For all his issues with trusting others, Ujinath does trust one: Kiena. He always has and always will. She is his unshakable foundation, his sparkling diamond and most valued treasure, one that he will cherish and keep and hold, nurture and love. No matter how often he may stubbornly clash with Kiena’s willfulness and stubbornness, always will Ujinath remember their bond and in turn it will only strengthen it. As he matures, Ujinath’s trust issues will have an explanation behind it, for the blue uses it as a shield to protect those he loves and himself, but above all he does it to protect Kiena. « I have seen your past, when the memories come to you in the late hours of the night and trouble you. I won’t let people like them hurt you anymore or hurt us. We are safe together and they are only memories. »

Ujinath will reluctantly begin to trust other dragons more so than humans, as he’ll discover soon enough that most of his kin cannot be as deceiving and double-faced as their riders or humankind. Slowly he will come out of his shell enough to form a few tentative friendships among his clutch siblings and later Wingmates when Kiena is tapped into a Wing. But he will not actively seek them out and prefer to remain aloof and alone, leaving most dragons to approach him first. But if Kiena vouches for them, Ujinath will accept them. Not entirely, but neither will he be as brusque and standoffish as he would be if the decision was left entirely to him.

She is usually very logical except for times when her emotions get in the way. — Suzanne Collins on Katniss Everdeen; Hunger Games

As for the friends Kiena chooses to keep (if any), beware of Ujinath’s constant guard. Even in youth he will be logical when his mind is calm and at peace. If Kiena becomes frustrated or upset, Ujinath’s hold on his more logical senses will slip and he will become ruled by his emotions: a very troubling and tricky quirk to work through Weyrlinghood with as he will broadcast loud for all to hear if Kiena isn’t swift enough to put his anxieties and temper to rest. Kiena will have to learn to temper herself in order to keep Ujinath steady and together they will learn the crucial balance needed. It may take Turns however, as both are still so young and immature and even when out of Weyrlinghood, Ujinath may have times of regression just as he does with his memory recall. No one is perfect and the blue will come to accept his flaws in time and likewise will try to teach the same acceptance to Kiena. Not to mend those flaws but hone them, sharpen them and use them to an advantage rather than a disadvantage.

“So after, when he whispers," You love me. Real or not real?" I tell him, "Real.” — Katniss Everdeen; Hunger Games

As he grows, more of the root of Ujinath’s trust issues will come to light: his perception of reality versus non-reality are warped and never will it ever come to right. Concepts of dreams and imagination are understood and grasped, but he struggles to define the boundaries and his insecurity with trust only lends to him often on edge and asking: « Is this real? » while he’s focused on Kiena’s thoughts or suddenly catching a glimpse of some memory of hers or the shard of a nightmare. It will be up to Kiena in the beginning to help reassure him and untangle the web he’s woven his thoughts into until the pieces fit and click as they should. Eventually he will grow out of the worst of it as he matures, but in times of high stress or emotions, he will regress again.

It’s not to say that Ujinath is not clever, for he is and perhaps too clever at that. While his memory may fail him, he can rely heavily on Kiena’s knack for memory recall of events, past and present, if he feels the need and it is best not to deny him. For if he is left to guess, he will doubt and if he doubts, it will trigger another episode as the details escape him and he muddles up what he normally should be able to recall. « But I thought Th’ero your father and Ilentho your brother. And is I’re not X’ar? I… I don’t know anymore! What’s real? What’s wrong and what is right? I cannot tell! » So it begins and so it is left to Kiena to sooth him and in turn perhaps learning a great lesson in patience, among other things.

Collins has described Katniss as being an independent survivalist, lethal, but good at thinking outside the box. Katniss's past hardships (her father's death, mother's depression, and near starvation) have made her a survivor, and she will endure hardship and hard work to preserve her own life and the life of her family.

Throughout Weyrlinghood and his younger months and even later through life, Ujinath will constantly be pushing Kiena to her limits. As his grows and his flaws become controlled, he will begin to show other quirks that will later become forefront and define him. It will be the image others will see, rather than the loner and socially awkward blue. He will slowly become more independent and his intelligence will make him good for thinking outside of the box. He is a survivor and does not balk at enduring hardship or hard work, especially if it’s to preserve and protect Kiena’s life, his own or that of family.

For that reason he will push Kiena. He knows of her past and her broken family and the emotional turmoil it caused her and continues to work on her. Yet why doesn’t Kiena understand how great she is? He can sense and see her true potential and gently will he urge her onwards. Ujinath encourages her and drives her forwards not because he wants to see if she can accomplish something, but because: « You are strong, fast and smart. Much more than you let others see. I know why you hide but you cannot let it define you. » A few more chops of meat, a few more steps, a few more laps or swings of the hammer at the forge, just a little more… He does it all to boost her confidence, to erase the self doubt that has clouded her mind for so many Turns.

On the flip side of things, Ujinath will be far less confident in his own abilities and Kiena will certainly be the star of the show in his eyes. He will never get to the point of self-defeat, but it will be enough to make Kiena step in to gently urge him when it comes time for his abilities to come to the forefront in Weyrlinghood and beyond. « I am not sure if I can do this, Kiena. I know I am strong, but what if I misjudge the winds? You’ve seen the others fly. What if I just hinder them or… worse? »

Reassuring him will be simple enough, but trying in others and Kiena will have to learn restraint and patience in these times. Too gentle and loving and he will grow suspicious. « You’re just saying that, Kiena. I’m awful at this! » Too indifferent and he may seek to prove you wrong, which in turn could lead to trouble. « So you think I can’t do it? I’ll show you. I’ll show them all that I’m not useless at this! » Never will he show this uncertain side of himself to others. It will remain another private thing shared between the bond he shares with Kiena. Outside he will appear cool and collected with the occasional surge of tactlessness or independence, if not what some may think as hot headedness and temper. Only Kiena will know the truth and that suits Ujinath just fine. If anyone should ask? « It’s nothing. »

Katniss is extensively knowledgeable in foraging, wildlife, hunting, and survival techniques.

“At some point, you have to stop running and turn around and face whoever wants you dead. The hard thing is finding the courage to do it.” — Katniss Everdeen, Hunger Games

Ujinath will certainly never lack for skill and his grace and nimbleness, be it land or sky, will be formidable. His slender build lends him an uncanny knack for acrobatics, though rarely will he indulge in them save for time of need. He is no braggart or show off, though as his confidence grows he will learn to acknowledge his skill but forever will he be modest and private and never seek validation for what he already knows. Despite all the hurdles he faced as a young blue, he will mature into one that is strong, intelligent and wise though his flaws will always be with him, only now they remain hidden. Only now he is wiser and over the Turns he will gain the experience he needs to be able to face any challenge the world brings him — and Kiena too.

He is a hunter by his very nature and he will not be content to feed among the pens for long. Eventually he’ll long for a challenge or an excuse to get out and fly with his most precious companion of all. Hunting will come almost naturally to him and all targets are fair game: wherries, felines, wild herdbeasts and wild runners… If it is his to hunt he will hunt it. It will be one of the few times he feels calm and at peace, when he’s out in the deep wilderness with Kiena at his side and some of the best bonding moments and conversations will be borne of it.

Ujinath will extend his passion for hunting and flight to mating flights. Once he’s mature enough to chase, most greens will lure him in once they begin to glow. He takes them quite seriously, a challenge and competition of the purest and most naturally instinctual that there is. No matter how Kiena may balk or hesitate, he will always embrace it as a necessary thing. Because Ujinath is a smaller dragon, he will rely on his agility in the air more than most, which may provide him an advantage as he’s able to slip between the other chases, sometimes in more unconventional ways. It will come at a cost, however, as he will tire more quickly than his larger brother and cousins and he will have to learn from experience how to nurture and conserve his strength and stamina. If he loses, he will simply retreat and return to his weyr to lick his wounds in seclusion. If he wins, he will be a doting and loving mate to the green however long she will tolerate his affections.

“It's not necessary. My nightmares are usually about losing you,” he says. “I'm okay once I realize you're here.” — Peeta Mellark, Hunger Games

“Peeta, you were supposed to wake me after a couple of hours," I say.
"For what? Nothing's going on here," he says. "Besides, I like watching you sleep. You don't scowl. Improves your looks a lot."
This, of course, brings on a scowl that makes him grin.” — Katniss Everdeen, Hunger Games

Ujinath will forever be by Kiena’s side, her unwavering support and companion and together he will help her achieve her best and she will help bring out his full potential. Even though they are both flawed in their own way, in time through each other they will discover how to overcome them together, rather than alone. He will always take an interest in what Kiena likes to do, even in her dabbling as Smithcraft, sharing his opinions of her work or even her designs and encouraging her to pursue any of her goals, even if she becomes the master of none. What does it matter? So long as she has him and he has her in the end, that is all that matters to Ujinath.

Mindvoice

…In Catching Fire Peeta reveals his artistic skills, first painting pictures of the Games, then painting a picture of Rue (district 11 tribute in the 74th Hunger Games) during his private training session, in order to "hold them responsible, just for one moment, for killing that little girl."

To any that Ujinath considers a stranger or unworthy of his trust, what they see of his mind will be only a glimpse of the true depth of it. Most of his mind is a vast and age-old landscape of rolling hills, meadows, thick forests, and mist shrouded mountains. But most will only ever get a teasing glimpse of it, as often the blue will ‘shield’ by placing a mental and visual electric fence that, depending on his level if distrust, may hum with “electricity” — a subtle warning to Back Off or get painfully zapped for their efforts. For Ujinath’s mind is his sanctuary and he allows precious few past that fence. Those that do are either welcomed or are crafty enough to fool him.

Those who do gain entry or slip through are welcomed by a vast and never ending array of breathtaking landscapes, each far more expansive than the last. They are the embodiment of wilderness, freedom, escape, mystery and untouched beauty. His mind is bursting with creativity and sensitivity, exploring the realms of beauty and seek out the deepest emotions that can be felt.

So it should be no surprise with how stunning the landscapes he choses can be, if one is permitted to see within the depths of his thoughts, to see what is beyond that fence and so jealously guarded and protected. Just as the beauty of the landscape will influence emotions in those who witness it (including Kiena herself), so will Ujinath use it as an extension of his emotions. Sprawling meadows and fields, framed by distant forests and mountains under a clear blue sky will often accompany his calmer moods, troubled or uncertainty will lead to mist shrouded forests, autumn’s bounty of color may reflect a creative spell or eagerness, nightscapes and storms for more negative moods and so the list goes on.

Ujinath’s mind is his canvas and for Kiena and a rare select few he uses it as his only way to convey emotions he otherwise cannot express. No one landscape is ever quite the same and he is fond of slipping in certain details that either relate to the topic at hand or hold some symbolism. Only one repeats itself and it is of a water-dwelling plant with arrowhead shaped leaves and small rounded tri-petalled white flowers. Always will he have some small body of water where these flowers grow, even with the fence present: though they will be very much out of reach.

Inspiration

The theme for this clutch at Western was music in movies. The Spectacular Spectacular Egg was based off of the movie Moulin Rouge, of course. The egg's desc was based on the Moulin Rouge itself, (check out the cover of the DVD). Lots of bright shiny colors, very busy and plenty of contrast. For the mind touches I chose four of the songs from the movie. The first touch was based on Come What May, the second was based on Because We Can and El Tango de Roxanne and the final touch was based on One Day I'll Fly Away. I tried to capture the theme of the songs into the touches.

Since the egg theme was Moulin Rouge, I went with a blue diamond as the theme for Ujinath's description, trying to keep it relatively simple as you preferred. I went with a smaller sleeker design since that seemed to fit Ujinath better, but with some angularity.

The name comes from mixing together two Japanese words yuujin - friend, and naiya - diamond. I tried to keep it simple yet different.

Ujinath was a bit of a challenge for me. I had voted Kaliena on green just so that I could make her a real Katniss dragon. It was a bit more difficult to roll Katniss into a blue, which is why Ujinath has developed some Peeta traits as well.

Both Moulin Rouge and The Hunger Games have the common theme of a strong female protagonist that falls in love unexpectedly, and it throws their world a bit out of order. So I've written Ujinath to sort of support that role without being overly loving or mushy like Peeta or Christian. I'd like to claim that Zi'on is who turned Kaliena's life upside down, but we both know that would be a lie. ;) Just the act of impressing will probably do that for Kaliena, since she will indeed be tied to the weyr at that point. Instead I've tried to focus on the complexities of Katniss and some of Peeta that make them interesting as characters and roll that up into a dragon personality that would be suitable for Kaliena as a character.

With that said, Ujinath may not be exactly what you're looking for. But the good news is now that he's yours, you are free to take him and do as you will with him! Everything here is just a suggestion of course. Ujinath is yours and you should make him yours.

Thank you so much for coming out to stand at Western again, Kaliena. This cycle would not have been the same without you! <3 <3
